Why did the writer follow the pilot of another aeroplane?

The writer followed the pilot of the mysterious black aeroplane for a few simple reasons-

He was flying his Dakota late at night and ran into a big storm that made it impossible to see anything. His compass and other tools stopped working, so he had no idea where he was. Feeling lost and worried, he suddenly saw this other aeroplane appear out of the dark clouds. The surprising part was that this aeroplane had no lights on, which is not usual.

The pilot of the black aeroplane seemed to notice that the writer was in trouble and waved at him, signalling to follow. In that hard moment, seeing someone else up there felt like a sign of hope. The writer thought, “This pilot must know a way out of this storm.” The pilot was lost and running out of fuel.
