Why did Anne Frank maintain a diary?
Anne Frank started her diary because she felt she lacked a true friend with whom she could share her deepest thoughts and feelings. She received the diary on her thirteenth birthday and immediately took to writing in it as a form of companionship.
In her diary, which she named ‘Kitty,’ Anne found an outlet to express herself freely, something she felt she couldn’t do with the people around her.

Writing in her diary was new and a bit strange for Anne. At first, she thought no one would care about what a thirteen-year-old girl wrote. But she really wanted to share her thoughts and feelings. She needed to “get things off her chest.” This was because she found it hard to form close friendships. She felt her friends didn’t understand her deeply.
Her diary became her trusted friend. It was a private place where she could explore who she was, express her frustrations and fears, and write about her experiences. During the scary times of hiding from the Nazis, the diary was more than just a record of events. It was a key part of how she coped with the stress and danger.
