This slang is used for implying that every individual must enjoy life to its fullest; even if it means to take risks since there will not be a second life to live. This acronym, as well as the phrase, is used in music too. ‘The Motto’ song sung by the popular rapper named Drake popularized both the acronym and the phrase among the young generation.

It is holding a trademark to this phrase in the context of its business of the frozen yoghurt since the year 2010.

In the twenty-first century, the rapper named Drake highly popularized the YOLO acronym and phrase. He wanted to release a joint mixtape named YOLO in the year 2011 along with Rick Ross. The phrase was mentioned in his numerous tracks for promoting the mixtape. An example of such tracks is ‘The Motto’, which was released to the public in the year 2011. The main aim of this track is to promote the tape. The use of the YOLO slang has resulted in its elevation of the word into the common informal usage. Drake wanted to acquire the royalties for the usage of this slang because of the uncountable production of merchandise that contained the phrase as well as the lyrics of his song. These merchandises can be seen at the Macy’s and Walgreens stores. However, Drake does not have the trademark on YOLO.

According to a popular hip-hop magazine named Da South, the deconstruction of the YOLO phrase has been done by the rapper named Lecrae in his ‘No Regrets’ song. This song was released by him in the year 2012. ‘The Lonely Island’ a comedy band released a song named ‘YOLO’ in the year 2013. It parodied the phrase and the individuals using the slang. This song gained much popularity in many countries.

According to the online media like the Huffington Post and the Washington Post, YOLO acronym and phrase is ‘dumb’ and ‘the acronym which anyone will love to hate’. Many have criticized this word for its usage in association with the youth’s irresponsible behaviour. The most notable example of this scenario is a twitter post by Ervin Mckinness, a famous rapper. He tweeted about driving at 193 km/hr and being drunk, just before dying in a gruesome car accident.
