PRT — Primary Teacher

PRT Full-Form stands for Primary Teacher. PRT refers to the Primary Teacher Examination that is organized by many states in India for the purposes of recruiting graduate teachers in various state government schools.

The states which conduct PRT examinations set up their own dates of examination and other administrative requirements, though there are certain commonalities shared among various state-conducted examinations. In order to write the PRT examinations, the candidate is required to have obtained a Senior Secondary School Certificate with a minimum 50 per cent or 10+2 with minimum 50 per cent marks or any other equivalent. Also, it is required from the candidates that they pass the Central Test Eligibility Test (abbreviated as CTET) which is organized by the Central Board of Secondary Education (abbreviated as CBSE) as per the guidelines laid down by the NCTE.

The candidates must be proficient in both English and Hindi for the purposes of this examination. The syllabus of PRT examination comprises two parts, namely: Part I and Part II. Part I comprises a total of 120 MCQs with each question bearing one mark.

The questions come from Reasoning Ability, Teaching Methodology, and Current Affairs. Part If comprises questions on English and Hindi, each totalling 20 in number. Those candidates who have qualified the CTET examination and have a Bachelor in Elementary Education (abbreviated as B.E1.Ed.) or a Diploma in Education (abbreviated as D.Ed.) are also eligible to appear in a PRT examination. However, candidates who possess Bachelor of Education are not eligible for the post of Primary Teacher and therefore, cannot write the PRT examinations.

Some of the commonly conducted PRT examinations include HPSSSB PRT examination, which is organized by the Subordinate Services Selection Board of Himachal Pradesh; HSSC PRT Examination, which is essentially the Haryana Staff Selection Commission Primary School Teacher; Chandigarh PRT examination, which is Chandigarh Education Department (abbreviated as CED); NVSPRT examination, which is basically the NavodayaVidyalayaSamiti Primary Teacher Test; UPSESSB PRT Examination, which is organized by the Uttar Pradesh Secondary Education Service Selection Board; DSSSB PRT examination, which is organized by the Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board; and KVS PRT Examination, which is KendriyaVidyalayaSangathan Primary Test, etc.
