PTO — Paid Time Off

PTO Full-Form refers to Paid Time Off. PTO refers to a policy applicable in some employee handbooks providing a bank of hours during which the employers gives vacation days, sick days, personal days and allow employees to make use whenever the need arises.

This policy is usually found in the United States of America, where there is the absence of federal legal requirements specifying a minimum number of vacation days (paid). Instead of this, the American companies evaluate the amount of paid time off that is given to employees, considering the payoff in retaining and recruiting employees.

In the United States of America, paid vacation is generally of two weeks every year in addition to about 10 paid federal day-offs. Usually, the PTO hours include everything from sick days to planned vacations and are becoming more common in Human Resource Management.

In contrast with conventional leave plans, PTO plans do not differentiate employees absences from vacation days, personal days, or sick days. Upon employing someone, the company evaluates the amount of PTO hours to be designated ever year as well as a rollover policy. Many companies allow accumulation of PTO hours for only a year and the unused hours vanish at the end of the year.

It is ambiguous as to when PTO plans started being used in the workplaces. In a study organized by World at Work in the year 2010, 44 per cent of the surveyed 387 companies said that they started implementing the PTO plans before the year 2000, though the exact period is still not known in many cases.
