Short summary of the poem: The Lake Isle of Innisfree

The poet wants to go to a quiet place called Innisfree, a small island in a lake. He says he will build a small cabin there using clay and sticks. He wants to grow his own food, like beans, and keep a hive for honey. He wants to live alone and peacefully in nature.

The poet dreams of having peace there, which he says comes slowly, like morning dew. He talks about hearing crickets at night, seeing a purple glow in the sky at midnight, watching the sunlight in the afternoon, and enjoying the soft sounds of birds in the evening.

Even though the poet is standing in a crowded city street, he can still hear the calm sound of lake water in his heart. He feels a strong wish to go to Innisfree, where he can be free and happy with nature.

This poem shows the poet’s love for peace, nature, and a simple life away from the noise of the city.

Detailed summary of the poem: The Lake Isle of Innisfree

1. A Quiet Dream in Nature: The poet, W. B. Yeats, wants to go and live at a peaceful place called Innisfree. It is a small island in a lake in Ireland. He doesn’t live there now, but he dreams about it often. He says he will build a small cabin there. It will be made of clay and wooden sticks. This shows that he wants to live a simple life, close to nature.

2. A Simple and Peaceful Life: The poet says he will plant nine rows of beans near his hut. He will also keep a honeybee hive. He wants to live alone, in quiet, away from city noise. He believes that he will find peace there. He describes peace as something that comes slowly, just like dew falling in the morning. This tells us how gentle and calm the peace of nature feels to him.

3. Beauty of the Day and Night: The poet then talks about how Innisfree looks at different times of the day. At midnight, the sky glows in a soft purple colour. During the afternoon, the sun shines golden on the land. In the evening, birds flap their wings and make soft sounds. All these images show that every moment in Innisfree is full of natural beauty.

4. The City Can’t Steal the Dream: In the last stanza, the poet says he is not in Innisfree yet. He is standing on a city road, in a grey, noisy place. But even there, he hears the soft sound of lake water in his heart. This shows that his love for nature lives inside him, even when he is not near it. He longs for peace and a simple life.

Final Thought: This poem tells us that nature can bring peace to the mind. Even if we live in busy cities, we can dream of quiet places and feel calm inside. The poet teaches us to find happiness in simple and natural things.
