Gross Registered Tonnage (GRT) is the volume of space within the hull and enclosed space above the deck of a merchant ship which can be used for cargos, stores, passengers and crew.
Gross Register Tonnage was defined by the Moosrom Commission in 1854. Gross and net register tonnages were replaced by gross tonnage and net tonnage respectively when the International Maritime Organization (IMO) adopted the International Convention on Tonnage Measurement of ships on 23 June 1969.
