103.Short Story: Two Friends and the Bear

Ram and Shyam were very good friends………. once they passed out of a thick jungle……. Ram saw a bear…….. he climbed up a tree…….. Shyam was in a fix…….. he pretended to be dead by withholding his breath ……..the bear left him thinking him to be a corpse (dead body)…….. Moral.

In a certain village once lived two boys. One was Ram and the other was Shyam. Both claimed to be bosom friends. Both vowed to help each other in the time of adversity.

Once they had to go out on a very long journey. Their way lay through a thick jungle. They went on and on. On the way Ram saw a dangerous bear standing: Without warning his friend, he immediately climbed up a tree.

He reached the top of it and hid in the thick branches of the tree. Shyam could not understand the whole matter. When he looked around, to his utter baffling, he found the bear coming toward stint-He was badly frightened. He did not know what to do. He could not climb the tree so fast as Ram had done. The poor fellow was nervous. Suddenly a flash came to his mind. He had read somewhere that a bear never touched a dead body.

He lay down on the ground at once. He held his breath. He did the acting of a dead man. The bear came up to him. He knelt on his body. He sniffed and smelt Shyam. Finding him lifeless, he left him to his fate and went away. Soon his fast friend, who was actually coward and selfish, climbed down. He shed crocodile’s tears. Then he asked what the bear had said in his ear.

Shyam who was very angry at once said, “The bear has advised me t° be at my guards from selfish friends like you.” Ram had to feel very small. He could not face Shyam.

Moral: A friend in need is a friend indeed.
