Matilda Loisel is a young, pretty woman but she is unhappy with her simple life. She dreams of being rich, with beautiful dresses and expensive jewellery. Her husband, M. Loisel, is a simple clerk who loves her and tries to make her happy. They live modestly because they don’t have much money.

One day, M. Loisel brings home an invitation to a fancy ball (party) at the Minister’s residence on January 18, thinking it will make Matilda happy. Unfortunately she did not become happy but she got upset because she has no elegant dress to wear. M. Loisel gives her 400 francs he saved for a rifle to buy a nice dress. Matilda buys a beautiful dress but soon feels sad again because she has no jewellery.

M. Loisel suggests she borrow jewellery from her rich friend, Jeanne Forestier. Matilda borrows a beautiful diamond necklace from Jeanne and feels happy. At the ball, she is the centre of attention and enjoys the evening, feeling proud and admired.

After the ball (party), Matilda realises she has lost the necklace. They search everywhere but cannot find it. They decide to replace it with an identical one, which costs 36,000 francs. M. Loisel uses his 18,000 francs savings and borrows the rest. They buy the necklace and return it to Jeanne, who doesn’t notice the difference.

To repay the debt, Matilda and her husband work very hard for ten years. They live in poverty, and Matilda does all the housework herself. M. Loisel takes extra jobs to earn more money. Matilda becomes strong but looks worn out and tired.
