The Last Leaf Characters

Character Sketch of Behrman in The Last Leaf

The painter, Behrman, was 60 years old and lived on the ground floor of the house where Sue and Johnsy lived. He had a lifelong dream to paint something beautiful. Sue told him about Johnsy. Johnsy felt she would die once the last leaf fell from the ivy-covered creeper outside his window. Behrman thought of a plan to save her life.
He loved to paint and spent his time during evenings paying attention to nature. One night, he visited a nearby park near his home and saw a leaf on the ivy. The next day, the leaf became entangled in his roof gutters and Johnsy gasped for breath. But Behrman didn’t die from pneumonia because he was out painting all night on behalf of another person in place of himself. This would lead him to achieving one of his life’s biggest dreams—to be able to paint a masterpiece.

The Last Leaf Character Sketch of Johnsy

Johnsy was a young artist who lived with her friend Sue. Johnsy fell very sick and, shortly after, had pneumonia; she hoped the ivy outside of her window would die as well once the last leaf on it fell down. The leaves were falling off of the ivy very quickly due to the windy weather.
One leaf remained and yet Behrman felt that the last leaf would have fallen in the night and she would have died. But Behrman went out in the cold, dark night to paint one leaf on a wall. The next morning, Johnsy saw this last leaf and felt renewed strength to live again. Unfortunately, her foolish attitudes lead her to the death of Behrman. Behrman was a weak-hearted woman.

The Last Leaf Character Sketch of Sue

Sue was a young artist who lived with Johnsy. She tried her best to comfort Johnsy and help her get better from her illness. But Johnsy wouldn’t listen to her. She was adamant. Sue sought help from Behrman to solve the problem by painting a leaf on the wall. So we find that Sue is a true friend of Johnsy.
