Class 9 Kathmandu Introduction
In this chapter, Vikram Seth recalls the memories of his visit to Kathmandu—a city in Nepal. He visited the famous Pashupatinath temple of the Hindus and the Baudhnath Stupa of the Buddhists. He found that there was much noise and confusion around the Hindu temple but Buddhist shrine was strangely peaceful.
He described the scene near the many temples in Kathmandu such as small shrines and monkeys fighting with each other.

“Kathmandu” is a part of Vikram Seth’s travelogue “Heaven Lake” where he recounts his journey from China to India via Tibet and Nepal. The extract is the account of two spiritual sites when they were visited- the Pashupatinath and the Baudhnath stupa, places most sacred to Hindus and Buddhists respectively.
He gives not just a description of what it looks like inside these temples, but also his observations about the surroundings, and contrasting the hectic activity with the sereneity at the Buddhist stupa.
