Sir

Subject: Conflict between faith and growth

Let me express my views on the conflict between faith and growth through the columns of your popular newspaper.

In India, the majority of people are still illiterate and superstitious with strong religious beliefs. They do not have a realistic and rational approach to life. That is why they often oppose even those schemes and projects which are meant for their own betterment and welfare. Sometimes the authorities in their excessive zeal for growth become irrational by ignoring the mindset of the common people. The result is a sort of conflict between faith and growth. Sometimes this conflict becomes aggressive and violent in nature.

There are many examples of such conflict in our country. The recent one is between the devotees of Lord Rama and the advocates of demolishing Ram Setu to build a sort of passage in the Indian Ocean for shipping benefits. This has resulted in much bitterness at the highest level. In our towns and cities, roads remain congested and a source of traffic jams because people refuse to demolish their places of worship or statues of their idols constructed along the passage. Sometimes they even object to the constructing or blocking off a path on one or the other traditional belief.

In order to avoid all conflicts between faith and growth, the authorities or persons in power should adopt a tactful approach to convince people about what is right and what is wrong. They should go slow and be practical.

Yours faithfully

Raman
