BDS is a degree in dental surgery which aims at providing treatment to the problems related to mouth and tooth. Teeth form the important component of the mouth and help in chewing the food. Dental Science forms an important part of medical sciences and today’s dental surgeons are not only trained to treat dental diseases but also to diagnose and treat diseases occurring in the entire Orofacialal region ranging from dental caries to oral cancer.

BDS is a four-year degree with one year of internship. After the successful completion of the degree, the students can gain practical experience through an internship at any of the private or government dental clinics. These help them in gaining external knowledge and make them capable to handle injuries related to teeth. The candidates after the entire completion of this course along with internship can run a dental clinic and are awarded the post of a dentist. These dentists solve the problems related to gums, jaws and tooth decay.

In the modern medical scientific field, we do not need only a dental surgeon, but we need a medically competent dental surgeon. Keeping this in mind the entire teaching and training programmes at the undergraduate level has been formulated, including specific counselling to the student to train him in the required skills and develop him into a professional dentist.
