Short Summary of the Poem: The Last Bargain

The poem is about a man who is looking for work. He wants to make a bargain, which means he wants to give something and get something in return.

First, a king offers him power, but the man says no because power can make people cruel. Then, a rich man offers him gold, but the man does not want that either because money cannot give true happiness. After that, a beautiful lady offers him her smile, but the man still refuses because beauty fades with time.

Finally, a little child comes and offers nothing but his love and laughter. The man happily accepts this. It is the last bargain, and it makes him truly free and happy.

The poem teaches us that real joy comes from love and innocence, not from power, money, or beauty.

Detailed Summary of the Poem: The Last Bargain

1. A Man Looking for a Bargain: The poem starts with a man walking on a road, looking for someone to make a bargain with. A bargain means a dealโ€”he wants to give something and get something in return, like work or happiness. He is ready to sell his strength or time, but he wants a fair and honest deal that makes him feel free and happy.

2. The King Offers Power: The first person to make an offer is a king. He comes with his chariot and says he will give the man power. But the man says no. He feels that power is not true happiness. People who rule with power often make others afraid and sad. So the man keeps walking.

3. The Rich Man Offers Gold: Next, a rich man comes with a bag of gold coins. He offers the man money to work for him. But again, the man says no. He knows that money cannot buy peace or love. People with money may still feel empty and unhappy. So the man walks away.

4. The Beautiful Lady Offers Her Smile: Then, a beautiful woman appears in a garden full of flowers. She gives the man a sweet smile and asks him to work for her. But the man sees that her smile is empty, and beauty does not last forever. So, he refuses her too.

5. The Child Brings Joy and Freedom: Finally, the man sees a little child playing on the beach. The child is full of joy and laughter. He does not offer gold, power, or beauty. He just plays in the sand and smiles. The man feels free and happy with the child. He makes his last bargain with the childโ€”to work for nothing but love and joy.

6. The Real Meaning of the Poem: The poem teaches us a beautiful lesson: Real happiness doesnโ€™t come from power, money, or beauty. It comes from innocence, love, and pure joy, like the kind we see in children. The last bargain is the best one because it brings freedom and true happiness.

This gentle poem shows that the smallest things in life can bring the greatest peace.
