Short Summary of the chapter : The Ashes That Made Trees Bloom

Long ago in Japan, there lived an old couple. They had no children. They loved their pet dog, Muko, like a baby. They fed him the best food and cared for him deeply.

The old man was a rice farmer. Every day Muko went with him to the fields. One day, Muko led the old man to a spot in the field. When the man dug there, he found a pile of gold. The old couple became rich. They shared their wealth with their poor neighbours.

A wicked old couple in the village heard about this. They called Muko to their garden and forced him to find treasure. But Muko found only a dead kitten. Angry, they killed the poor dog.

The kind old man mourned Muko like his own child. He dreamt that Muko’s spirit asked him to make a mortar and mill from the pine tree under which Muko was buried. The old man did this. When he used the mortar and mill, boiled rice and beans turned into gold.

The greedy neighbours borrowed the mortar and mill. But for them, it gave only worms. In anger, they burned the mill.

The spirit of Muko came again in the old man’s dream. It asked him to collect the ashes of the burnt mill and sprinkle them on withered trees. When he did this, the trees blossomed with flowers.

The daimio, a great lord, passed through the village. The old man sprinkled ashes on a withered cherry tree. It burst into pink blossoms. The daimio was very pleased and rewarded him with gifts and an invitation to his castle.

The greedy neighbour also tried the same trick. But the ashes blew into the daimio’s eyes. He was beaten and thrown into the mud.

The kind old man and his wife lived a long, happy life. The wicked couple met a bad end.

Detailed Summary of the chapter : The Ashes That Made Trees Bloom

1. The Old Couple and Their Pet Dog :Long ago, in Japan, during the days of the daimios (the rich landowners), there lived an old man and his wife. They had no children. They loved their little dog, Muko, like their own child. They made a soft blue crape cushion for Muko to sit on. They fed him the best fish and rice. Muko loved them back with all his heart. (This shows how kind and loving they were.)

 2. The Dog Shows the Hidden Treasure :The old man was a rice farmer. Every day, Muko followed him to the fields. One day, Muko ran to him and pawed at his legs. At first, the old man thought Muko was playing. But Muko kept whining and moving around a spot. The old man dug there and found a pile of gold. They became rich in one hour. They bought new land, shared their wealth with poor neighbours, and treated Muko with great kindness.

 3. The Greedy Neighbours Kill the Dog :In the same village, there lived a wicked old man and his wife. They were cruel to animals. Hearing about the treasure, they called Muko to their garden. They gave him tasty food to tempt him. Muko scratched the ground near a pine tree. But when they dug, they found only a dead kitten. In anger, they beat Muko to death and buried him under the pine tree. (This shows how greedy and cruel people can harm even innocent beings.)

 4. The Dog’s Spirit Helps Again :The kind old man was heartbroken. He mourned for Muko like his own child. He visited the grave, placed flowers, water, and food, and burned incense. That night, Muko’s spirit appeared in his dream. It asked him to make a mortar and a mill from the pine tree’s wood. The old man did as told. When he used the mortar to pound rice, it turned into gold. When he ground beans in the mill, gold rained down. They became rich again.

5. The Greedy Neighbours Fail Again :The greedy neighbours borrowed the mortar and mill. But for them, the rice and beans turned into worms and dirt. Angry, they burned the mortar and mill to ashes.

6. The Magic of Ashes Again : Muko’s spirit came in a dream. It told the kind old man to sprinkle the ashes on withered trees to make them bloom. He collected the ashes and sprinkled some on a dead cherry tree. It immediately bloomed with beautiful pink flowers.

7. Reward from the Daimio :The daimio was to pass through the village. It was a rule to kneel down and not look at him. As the daimio passed, the old man climbed a withered cherry tree. He sprinkled ashes on it. The tree bloomed beautifully. The daimio was amazed. He rewarded the old man with gifts like silk robes, sponge-cake, fans, and invited him to his castle.

8. The Wicked Neighbour’s Bad End :The greedy neighbour also tried to copy. He climbed a cherry tree and threw ashes when the daimio passed. But nothing happened. Instead, the ashes blew into the daimio’s eyes. The man was beaten badly and thrown into a ditch.

9. A Happy Ending :The kind old man and his wife lived happily and peacefully. They remained rich and lived to a green old age. The wicked neighbours suffered because of their own greed and cruelty.
