Short Summary of the chapter : Expert Detectives

Nishad, a seven-year-old boy called Seven, and his ten-year-old sister Maya are very curious about their neighbour, Mr Nath. They live in Shankar House. Mr Nath looks thin, has scars on his face, and hardly talks to anyone. Maya believes that he is a criminal hiding from the police, while Nishad feels sorry for him and thinks he must be poor and lonely.

One day, Nishad visits Mr Nath with his mother, who is a doctor. Later, Nishad goes alone to meet Mr Nath and gives him a chocolate bar because he thinks Mr Nath is starving. Nishad also talks to Ramesh, the man who brings Mr Nath’s food from the restaurant downstairs. Ramesh tells him that Mr Nath eats simple food like two chapattis, dal, and some vegetables, and drinks tea twice a day. He pays in cash and gives good tips.

Ramesh also shares that every Sunday, a fair, fat man with spectacles visits Mr Nath and talks a lot, while Mr Nath listens quietly. Maya thinks this man is Mr Nath’s partner in crime. She even writes down all the facts like a real detective.

However, Nishad does not agree with Maya. He believes that Mr Nath is just a lonely man, not a crook. Maya tries hard to convince him, but Nishad decides that he wants to be Mr Nath’s friend.

Detailed Summary of the chapter : Expert Detectives

Nishad and Maya Get Curious :Nishad was a seven-year-old boy. His nickname was Seven because his name meant the seventh note in music. His sister Maya was ten years old. They lived in Shankar House. Both were very curious about a man named Mr Nath, who lived alone in Room 10 of their building. Mr Nath looked very thin, had scars on his face, and spoke very little. Maya believed he was a criminal hiding from the police. But Nishad thought Mr Nath looked poor and lonely.

Nishad Visits Mr Nath :One day, Nishad went with his mother to her clinic at Girgaum. His mother was a doctor and Mr Nath was her patient. Nishad got a chance to meet Mr Nath. Later, Nishad even went alone to meet him. He knocked loudly on Mr Nath’s door. Mr Nath opened the door and recognised Nishad because of a past meeting. Nishad gave him a bar of chocolate because he thought Mr Nath looked hungry and weak. Nishad felt sad because Mr Nath didn’t even invite him inside.

Information from Ramesh :After meeting Mr Nath, Nishad went downstairs to the restaurant where Ramesh worked. Ramesh was the man who delivered food to Mr Nath’s room. Ramesh told Nishad that every day he carried two chapattis, some dal, and a vegetable for Mr Nath. He also brought two cups of tea daily, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Mr Nath always paid in cash and gave good tips. Ramesh also said that every Sunday, a fat, fair man wearing spectacles visited Mr Nath for lunch. This visitor was very talkative, but Mr Nath stayed mostly silent.

Maya the Detective :Maya wanted to be a detective. She made a list of all the facts they knew about Mr Nath. She thought Mr Nath was using a fake name. She believed that the Sunday visitor was Mr Nath’s partner in crime. Maya imagined that Mr Nath was hiding stolen money inside his trunk. She was sure he was a crook.

Nishad Disagrees :Nishad did not agree with Maya. He thought Mr Nath was a kind man who had no friends. Nishad believed that Mr Nath gave good tips because he was generous, not because he was bribing Ramesh. He wanted to be Mr Nath’s friend. Maya got angry with Nishad for not supporting her ideas. But Nishad stayed firm and decided he would find out the truth in a kind way.
