 ROHTASPUR: 18 JULY

JULY The Cabinet Committee cleared today the setting up of an Oil Refinery in Rohtaspur. The project is to be set up by the GR group of Industries in collaboration with Burma Shell U.K. within 5 years. It will save the valuable foreign exchange to the tune of 200 crores a year spent in importing various petro-products.

Sir,

Sub:-  Disadvantages of the Project

Through the column of your esteemed daily, I would like to draw the kind attention of the concerned authorities and common masses towards the Disadvantages of the Project.

I have read an article in yesterday’s newspaper that the proposal of setting up an Oil Refinery in Rohtaspur has been cleared by the Cabinet Committee. I am writing this letter to express my deep concern over the environmental pollution the oil refinery shall create over the surrounding areas. This region is considered the rice bowl of the country. Its contribution to the Central Pool for food grains is about 60%. The poisonous smoke emitted by the refinery shall play havoc on the paddy fields resulting in less produce. In that case, we may have to import rice while today we are exporting this commodity to various countries.

There is growing resentment among the farmers whose agricultural land is being acquired for the refinery. I earnestly appeal to the Government to reconsider its decision and save the farmers of this area from being uprooted from their land.

Yours faithfully,

 Shalini Gupta
