The predecessor of NASA was NACA or National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. It was disestablished after the passing of the National Aeronautics and Space Act in the year 1958. The news agency started its operations from 1st October of the year 1958. NASA comes under the jurisdiction of the US Government and has its head office in Washington DC. It has employed more than seventeen thousand people. In the year 2015, its annual budget was nineteen billion dollars.

Space Programs and Missions of NASA

NASA has led many efforts of space exploration in the US since it was established. These efforts include the missions like the Apollo moon landing, the Skylab, and the space shuttle. It is currently providing support to the ISS or the International Space Station. It is also responsible for overseeing the progress as well as the development of the Orion, which is a crew vehicle that can be used for multiple purposes; the commercial crew vehicles and the SLS or Space Launch System Vehicles. Facilities of NASA

The facilities of NASA consist of the communication, construction and research centres that immensely help in the functioning and completion of the space missions of this agency. At the KSC or Kennedy Space Center, a short-line railroad is operated by NASA, and it owns two Boeing planes that are used for transporting the SSO or the Space Shuttle Orbiter.

The KSC or Kennedy Space Center is among the best-known facilities of NASA. Since the year 1968, it has been used as the launch site for nearly every human space flight of the US. It is still being used for managing and operating the unmanned rocket launching facilities for the civilian space programs of the US, even though the human space flights are currently on hold.

The flight control for the manned space missions is managed in the JSC or Johnson Space Center. It is the leading centre of NASA for activities related to the ISS or International Space Station. It also provides the housing facilities to the NASA Astronaut Corps. The Corps is responsible for selecting, training and providing astronauts for the international as well the US space missions. The field centres of NASA are located in California, Florida, Maryland, Texas, Ohio, Virginia, Mississippi and Alabama. Its additional facilities can be found in Louisiana, New Mexico, Spain, and Australia.
