All NITs are independent institutions that allow them to establish their own courses and curriculum. In the early years of foundation, NITs were called the Regional Engineering Colleges (abbreviated as RECs) and were functional under the state governments. In the year 2002, the Ministry of Human Resources Department announced that it would upgrade all the RECs to the present NITs. The change was on the lines of the IITs.
