You can try the full form of GPRS and gain confidence at least in meaning of GPRS. Edumantra takes good care of you so buying books  for competitive exams is not necessary.  Additionally we would like to tell that the full form of GPRS is  General Packet Radio Service.

GPRS Full-Form Name: GPRS Meaning

GPRS Full-Form | What is General Packet Radio Service (GPRS)

GPRS Full-Form refers to General Packet Radio Service. GPRS is the upgraded technology of the basic GSM or Global System for mobile communication and provides more speed as compared to the GSM. The ETSI or European Telecommunications Standard Institute originally standardized GPRS in response to the earlier cellular technologies like i-mode and CDPD. The 3GPP or 3rd Generation Partnership Project has the responsibility for its maintenance. The amount of data transferred forms the basis of the billing charges of the GPRS usage. It is different from circuit-switched data, which is charged on the basis of the number of minutes the system is connected. If the GPRS is used more than the amount mentioned in the bundle cap, then either the usage is disallowed, or the speed gets decreased, or the GPRS gets charged with the usage of every megabyte.

GPRS Services

The data capabilities of the GSM extend from the use of GPRS and provide various services. These services include broadcasting, MNIS or Multimedia messaging service, instant messaging, P2P or point-to-point service, SMS messaging, PoC or Push-to-talk service over cellular, internet applications using WAP or Wireless Application Protocol, P2M or Point-to-multipoint service, continues internet access, etc. The maximum SMS transmission speed of the GPRS is around thirty SMS messages every minute. As compared to the SMS transmission services of the GSM, the one provided by the GPRS is much faster. The same for the GPS is around six to ten SMS messages every minute.

GPRS Protocols

GPRS supports the IP or Internet Protocol. The mobile browsers used the fourth version of IP. It also supports the PPP or Point-to-point protocol. Although the mobile phone operators do not support this protocol, if the mobile is utilized as a modem, PPP can be used for tunneling the protocol to the mobile phone. This allows the dynamic assignment of the IP address to the mobile equipment.

GPRS also supports X.25 connections. Applications such as wireless payment terminals use these connections. X.25 can get support over IP and PPP. However, this needs the intelligence that is built into the terminal or a router for performing encapsulation. Each phone can be allocated more than one IP address with the utilization of the TCP/IP. The IP packets will be stored and forwarded by the GPRS to the phone while the handover process takes place. The loss of packets is handled by the TCP.

Hardware

The devices that support the GPRS can be categorized into three classes, which are class A, B, and C. The Class A devices are able to connect to the GSM and GPRS services simultaneously and have the capability of utilizing both at the same time. These devices are available in the present markets.

The class B devices, like class A devices, can connect to both GSM as well as GPRS services but can use only one of them at a time. The GPRS services, during the GSM service, are suspended. It resumes automatically after the conclusion of the GSM service. The majority of mobile devices come under this category. The class C devices can connect either to the GSM service or the GPRS service. These devices need manual switching from one service to another.

GPRS Modules and Modems

The modules of GPRS or GSM are similar to the other modems. Although the modem is external equipment, the integration of the module or GPRS or GSM in electronic equipment is possible. A GSM mobile itself is an embedded system. The embedded processor accompanies the GSM mobiles and offers an interface between the mobile network and the user.
