Early LANs required a high degree of technical knowledge and expertise to install, maintain and use. In 1980, the IEEE, in an effort to resolve problems with LANs, formed the 802 Local Area Network Standards Committee, which is informally called IEEE Project 802. The primary purpose of IEEE 802 is to set standards to enable intercommunications between equipment from a variety of manufacturers.
In 1983, the IEEE committee established several recommended standards for LANs and in the year 1985, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) adopted the IEEE 802 standards and in 1987, the standards were revised and reissued by the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO) as ISO 8802.
