Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) at the middle school level. A technique based on the Western design, CCE was launched in the year zero by Mr Kapil Sibbal, the then Minister of Human Resource Development in India, kicking out the old and dreaded ‘Board Examination’ for class X students.

 The traditional system of year-end marking, unquestionably laid as a heavy burden on the students, for whom, every mark lost in the exam was a reduction in the measure of their intelligence. The system had students immersing themselves completely into their textbooks and gave birth to superficial or rote learning. Scoring high superseded seeking knowledge and learning.

Based on the mantra of ‘Perform or Perish’, the old system of evaluation created enormous pressure and competition amongst the students and squeezed their social or recreational activities. Post-school hours, private tuitions and coaching replaced playtime or leisure time of the students.

 The ruthless system that judged a student’s performing capacity and IQ level on academics and academic score, created enormous pressure on students from all sides—parents, teachers and peers, was indeed a recipe of failure. It gave rise to many unpleasant incidents like students going into depression and often committing suicide. The student’s vocational skills or excellence in a field other than academics was never recognised and appreciated.

 With the introduction of CCE, the continuous grade-based evaluation, the students indeed breathed easy. The move of doing away with the marking system has been welcomed by all CCE is a well planned and well thought of grading system that not only evaluates the student’s academic performance on a regular basis but also considers student’s performance in vocational subjects and recognises his/her other skills and talent.

The grading system has undoubtedly eroded the stress that always loomed large before the students in the regime of the old system. With the aim of overall personality development, CCE has been able to fulfil the mission of school education that is to enable each student t9 to rise to his/her potential. Annual assessment under CCE is the total of cumulative formative assessments (FAS) and the term-end summative assessment. FA ranges from paper-pencil tests to quizzes, conversations, projects etc. ‘While SA is a terminal assessment of performance at the end of instruction. This new grading system is hence, carefully planned.

Thus, the grading system, vis-a-vis the old crude marking system, is a better and more intellectually evolved scheme of evaluation and facilitates the betterment of education in Indian schools.
