My Favourite Movie: 3 Idiots

Movies are short visual dramas enjoyed by people of all ages. Each Friday sees the fate of a new movie, whether it will be appreciated or disliked by the audiences. I personally do not get pleased with any movie easily. However, one movie that knocked my socks off was 3 Idiots directed by Rajkumar Hirani, released in 2009 with Amir Khan in the lead role. With a plot depicting the life of three engineering students in a prime college of the country, with a rigid college Principal and immense academic pressure, the movie resonated with its target audiences—the students and youth.

In an era where movies have absurd storylines adorned by item songs and an unnecessary love story, finding a movie with a meaningful plot and intelligent humour is as rare as hen’s teeth. 3 Idiots came as a respite here. A well-sculpted satire on the crude Indian education system that stands on the weak pillars of traditional rote learning and the mantra of ‘perform or perish’, the movie was a broad criticism of how the purpose of education in India has been reduced to preparing students for a rat race where those who land a job that pays them in six figures a month are the real winners.

The movie represented a lot of ideologies through the thoughtful plot touching several issues of the ruthless grading system, parental pressure and conformist textbook coaching with a blind eye to research and application. At the same time, it also dealt with the extremities of such pressures like students going into depression and committing suicide. The movie thus, made prominent the need to reform the education system of the country and the constrained mindset of the parents. Not only that, but it also unearthed the profound reason behind education which is to make the society a better place to live and not to merely score a 90%.

The movie also stressed on various values and philosophies like ‘strive for excellence and success will follow’ and not vice-versa which seems to be in vogue amongst the parents and teachers. It also encouraged the students to shun all their fears and pursue their dreams no matter how unconventional they may seem which was exemplified when one of the three protagonists chose to pursue a career in photography after completing engineering.

At the same time, it also stressed on humanism and treating others with respect. Even Mahatma Gandhi’s value of high thinking and simple living was re-inforced in the movie. However, the most cherished philosophy that the movie dispensed was ‘All is well’ that is not to panic or fret in difficult situations but be calm and optimistic throughout.

Raising social issues with the dressing of humour is a rare art in Indian cinema and 3 idiots managed to pull off the same cosily. Indeed, its fresh plot with crisp comedy successfully established a compelling connect with the audiences qualifying it as one of the most entertaining movies of the decade and a must-watch for all students, teachers and parents.
