Noise Pollution

Noise pollution refers to excessive noise in the environment, that may harm the activity or balance of human or animal life. Loud music at neighbour’s place or community centres around from an event in the vicinity, incessant honking, sound made by aeroplanes flying above one’s buildings, etc., are all examples of unwanted sounds that are very disturbing to ears and health. They are also sources of noise pollution. In addition to those listed above, there are other sources of the problem too, like barking dogs, construction sites, religious events like jagraatas’, industrial processes, etc, all create noise pollution. Noise pollution is known to cause many physiological ailments, the foremost being the loss of hearing. Prolonged exposure to noise damages the eardrums of a person and that is the reason why those who work in factories develop this ailment. Also, speech disorders may develop as a result of this concern.

 Chronic exposure to noise may cause other medical complications too, like increased risk of heart attacks, rise in blood pressure, increased stress, increase in vasoconstriction and increased risk of coronary artery disease. That is why it is not advised to have noisy activities like honking or loud music around hospitals.

Apart from this, noise pollution also causes annoyance and leads to sleep disorders and reduced productivity.

The last few years have seen tremendous improvement in awareness against this hazard. Through advertisements and hoardings, people are cautioned against indulging in or bearing any activity that produces troublesome sound. The government has also enforced laws and takes punitive actions against those making or generating late-night noise.

However, there are still no laws against many kinds and sources of noise pollution. There, do, however, are some steps that authorities and governments can take to make our communities and living places quieter.

These measures include banning noisy trucks and motorbikes, silencing zones near schools and hospitals, and constructing sound-proof rooms for noisy machines in industries. Planting trees along roads and in residential areas is also a good idea as they absorb sound.

 However, despite all mitigation measures and tips for authorities, it lies, above all, with every individual to realise his/her civic responsibility and refrain from indulging in any activity that disturbs others around.

 Noise pollution is a less talked of but serious menace and must be combatted in order to allow for the healthy existence of living beings.
