111.Short Story: The Cap-Seller and the Monkeys

Nathu Ram was a cap-seller……… sold caps and earned his bread ………one afternoon sleeping wider a tree ……..put his bundle of caps aside……… all monkeys living on the tree stole his caps……. knew that monkeys were imitators……….. threw down his cap ………monkeys did likewise ………Moral.

Nathu Ram was a cap-seller. He sold all kinds of caps from village to village and from street to street. Thereby he earned his bread in a respectable way. He was very happy with his lot.

One day he was on his way to a village with his bundle of caps on his head. His way passed through a jungle. The journey was long and the day was very hot. He felt extremely tired. He wanted to have a nap. Seeing a thick shady tree he lay down to a good rest. Soon he was fast asleep.

Now there lived many monkeys on the branches of the tree. They came down. They opened the bundle of the caps. They took out all the caps and wore on their heads. They were very happy. In an instant, they disappeared in the branches of the tree.

After a good nap, Nathu Ram got up. He found, his bundle of caps missing: He was very much surprised. He saw hither and thither. Then he saw upwards the sky to pray the Almighty to help him. He saw many monkeys hanging from the branches of the tree. They all had caps on their heads.

Now the problem was how to get back his caps. He thought of various ways. Then a flash came to his mind,` That monkey ate-imitators.- They imitate whatever they see’. In disgust, Nathu Ram threw down his own cap. The monkeys did likewise. They also threw down their caps. The poor man collected his caps and went his way.

Moral: Where strength fails presence of mind works.
