Tsunami:  Terror Waves

A tsunami is a series of fast-moving waves in the ocean caused by powerful earthquakes or volcanic eruptions. A tsunami has a very long wavelength and can be hundreds of kilometres long. In India, tsunami made headlines when the Indian ocean was struck by the terror waves for the first time in 2004, that caused untold damage in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Indonesia, Thailand and nearby areas.

The waves swept over the lands and beaches and people became helpless before the ferocious tides. Loss of human life was immense and the celebration of New Year’s Eve turned into an unfortunate event of gloom. Usually, it is the Richter scale and other scales, the same as used in measuring earthquake that is used in measuring the earthquake causing a tsunami.

Another massive scale tsunami was the tsunami that struck Japan in zon. The magnitude of the earthquake struck 8o miles east of the city of Sendai. That disaster resulted in a death toll of more than 10,000. Tsunami is a natural disaster or calamity that can strike, the coastal areas anytime.

Tsunami waves can stretch all the way to the seafloor. Arriving at the shore, such waves can grow suddenly by dozens of feet. In deep water, a tsunami can travel up to 700 km per hour.

However, sometimes, there are some warning signals that the monster waves give before arriving. An unusual lowering of ocean water, exposing the seafloor is a warning of a tsunami or other large wave. It means that the water will surge back strongly. There are also technologies available, especially in the developed countries that can sense tsunamis underway and issue warnings to get the areas at risk evacuated.

However, in case one is stuck or is present in a tsunami hit zone or where it is predicted to arrive, it is always advised that one should stay on higher ground or floors. Waves from the tsunami may arrive for eight hours or longer. One should return to the shore only when officials declare it as safe to do so, in case of a predicted tsunami.
