1. Aim for-
Meaning-If you aim for something, you intend to have it or achieve it.
Use-Ws a mistake to aim for perfection.
2. Back away-
Meaning-If you back away, you move away from someone or something, often because you are nervous or frightened.
Use- It seemed sensible to back away from the fire.
3. Barge in or barge into-
Meaning-If someone barge in. or barges into a room, they rudely interrupt other people.
Use- Don’t just come barging in like that! Knock first!
4. Beef up-
Meaning-Â If you beef something up, you add something that makes it more impressive or powerful.

Meaning-If you care about someone or somebody, you think that they are important & you show consideration for them.
Use-Â I don’t care about the damage I just want to know if anyone was hurt.
7. Centre on–
Meaning-Â If something centres on a particular thing, it is most concerned with that thing.
Use- Bill doesn’t regard golf as a hobby, his whole life is centred on it.
8. Come up with–
Meaning –Â If you come up with an idea, plan or proposal, you think of it or suggest it.
Use-The council have come up with a plan to solve the traffic problem.
9. Disapprove of-
Meaning-Â If you disapprove of something, you think it is wrong or you don’t allow it.
Use-A lot of people disapprove of smoking.
10. Dwell on
Meaning- If you dwell on something, you keep thinking or talking about it when you should forget it.
Use-Â Let’s not dwell on things that are best forgotten.
11. Above all
Meaning-Â chiefly, before everything else
Use- He is rich and good. Above all, he is honest.
12. Above-board
Meaning-not open to question, honest, straightforward, beyond reproach
Use- His integrity is above-board.
13. Above Par
Meaning-Â of superior quality
Use- Of all my suits, the blue one is above par
14. On account of
Meaning-for the sake
Use- The college will be closed on account of holidays.
15. The heel of Achilles
Meaning-a weak spot
Use- Drinking of wine proved to be the heel of Achilles for him.
16. To build castles in the air
Meaning-to think of something impossible of realization; to day-dream; to conceive fanciful ideas
Use- Do some solid work; do not build castles in the air
17. To assume airs
Meaning- to affect superiority
Use- He is an egoist; he always assumes airs.
18. To stand aloof
Meaning- to keep to oneself and not mix with others
Use- I have decided to stand aloof on this issue.

Use- Nobody trusts him because he is known as an Ananias.

Meaning- to be about to
