Meaning-If you explain a difficulty away; you try to persuade people that it doesn’t exist.

Use-It’s better, to tell the truth about why Ken isn’t here, instead of trying to explain away his absence.

 2. Fall into

Meaning-If something falls into a particular state. it begins to be in that state.

Use- A lot of the old traditions haw fallen into disuse.

 3. Fight back-

Meaning-If you fight back. you defend yourself against someone who is attacking you.

Use-We teaches the children never to start a fight but always to fight back.

 4. Follow up-

Meaning-If you follow up information that someone has given you, you use it to try to find out more information.

Use-Police investigators are following up a number of leads from members of the public.

 5. Get away-

Meaning- If you get away, you escape.

Use-It won’t be able to get away from the office until after 6 o’clock.

 6. Give up

Meaning-If you give up, you stop trying to do something and admit that you cannot do it.

Use- If you don’t win the first game, don’t just give up.

 7. Go ahead-

MeaningIf you go ahead with something. you do what you have planned, and if something goes ahead, it happens as you have planned.

Use-The date of the meeting has been confirmed so I can go ahead & book my flight.

 8. Go with-

Meaning-If one thing goes with another; it matches it or looks nice with it.

Use- What colour would go well with this hat?

 9. Hang around-

Meaning- If you hang around somewhere you stay there for quite a long time doing nothing, perhaps because you are waiting for someone or something.

Use-There’s suspicious looking character hanging around the school gate.

10. Mess up-

Meaning-If you mess something up. you spoil or ruin it.

Use- The exams had messed up Jack’s holiday plans.

11. Have on-

Meaning-If you have particular clothes on. that is what you are wearing.

Use-She had on a beautiful silk dress rd never seen before.

 12. Hit out at-

Meaning-If someone hits out at something, they criticize it very strongly.

Use- Most of the newspapers have hit out at the government’s decision to raise income tax.

 13. Identify with-

Meaning-If you identify with someone, you understand their feelings or their behaviour because your situation is similar to theirs.

Use- Parents often find it hard to identify with their teenage children.

 14. Insist on-

Meaning- If you insist on something or insist on doing something, you say or decide it or must do it.

Use-Bob is insisting on sending his children to private schools.

15. Jump at-

Meaning-If you jump at something such as an offer, you accept it quickly and eagerly.

Use-Most players would jump at the chance to play for their country.

 16. Keep off-

Meaning- If you keep someone or something off a place, you make them stay away from it.

Use- If you keep off something, you avoid talking about it.

17. Kick out-

Meaning-If someone is kicked out of a place, they are forced to leave.

Use-She’s been kicked out of every club in the town.

18. Lay off-

Meaning- If workers are laid off, they are dismissed from work, either temporarily or permanently, because there is not enough work for them to do.

Use-Over 2000 staff are being laid off in the company’s 50 stores around the country.

 19. Look into-

Meaning-If you look into something, you investigate it.

Use-The police are looking into how the accident could have happened.

 20 Round off

Meaning-If you round something off, you do something that ends it and makes it seem complete.

Use-They rounded off the concert with songs from famous stage shows.
