Confusion Of Words
- Accede (agree to). The officer acceded to my request.
Exceed (to go beyond, to surpass). The drive exceeded the speed limit and was fined.
- Accept (to receive, to agree to take). He accepted my advice.
Except (to exclude). All except Pankaj were present at the party.
- Access (way or right of approach). Access to your house is not good.
Excess (exceeding the normal limit). Excess of everything is bad.
- Adapt (to adjust, make to fit). He adapted himself to the new circumstances.
Adopt (to choose, to take, to accept). The childless couple adopted a son. Adept (being skilled). He is adept at playing chess.
- Adverse (hostile, opposite). His adverse remarks hurt me.
Averse (full of sentiments of dislike, hate. etc.). I am averse to swimming on a cold day.
- Allusion (reference). He made an allusion to his great forefathers.
ย Illusion (deception). Happiness in this world is only an illusion.
- Altar (noun. a raised platform to worship a god, saint, a great dead man. etc.). He worshipped at the altar of the saint.
Alter (verb: to change). He altered the plan after it was leaked.
- Amiable (likeable). Neelam is a likeable girl.
Amicable (friendly). The dispute was settled in an amicable way.
- Ant (an insect). Ants are clever insects.
Aunt (a female relation). My aunt is a shrewd lady.
- Application (to apply for some favour, leave, etc.). The officer rejected my application for the job.
ย Implication (that which is implied, involved). The implication of your action is that you will lose your job.
- Apposite (suitable). Your remarks were not opposed to the occasion.
Opposite (on the other side). My house is opposite the post office.
- Artist (painter). Rohit is an artist.
Artistย (a professional dancer, singer, performer, etc.) He is an artist of National School of Drama.
- Ascent (climb). The ascent to the Everest is very tough.
Assent (agreement, approval). The President gave his assent to the bill.
- Ascetic (one who lives a life of solitude and self-denial) Ascetics generally live in forests or on the hills.
Aesthetic (artistic, pertaining to beauty). We get aesthetic pleasure when we look at a beautiful painting.
- Attenuate (to make thin). He has become attenuated due to hard work and a meagre diet.
Extenuate (to diminish, lessen, to trouble). His extenuating circumstances have made him disappointed.
- Bail (the surety is given to a court). The court released him on bail.
Bale (a large bundle). Bales of cotton were lying in the yard of the cotton mill.
- Beneficial (useful). Apple is beneficial to our health
Beneficent (doing good). The beneficent king spent his life in the welfare of his people.
- Berth (sleeping place in a train or ship). He booked a berth in the Rajdhani Express.
Birth (being born). Mohan’s wife gave birth to a son.
- Beside (by the side of). The queen was sitting beside the king.
Besides (in addition to). Besides being a dancer, she is a singer also.
- Brake (a device for stopping a vehicle). He applied the brakes in order to stop the car.
Break (to shatter). He broke the mirror with a stone.
