Short Summary of the chapter : An Alien Hand
Tilloo lived with his parents under the surface of a planet. He had never seen the sun or stars. His father worked on the surface and used a secret passage. Tilloo was curious and one day, when his father was resting, he took his security card and entered the passage. But he was caught quickly by the security system and brought back home. His father explained that people live underground because the sun became too strong. Animals, birds, and fish died. Only humans survived using technology.
Next day, Tilloo’s father saw a strange dot on the screen in the Control Room. It was not a star. It was a spacecraft coming from a nearby planet. It was unmanned and had instruments. The President of the Central Committee talked to others. They decided not to do anything and just watch it quietly.
Later, Tilloo got a chance to visit the Control Room with his father. He saw the spacecraft and its mechanical hand coming out. In excitement, Tilloo pressed a red button. The hand stopped working. People were shocked. But later, on Earth, NASA told the press that the problem was small and the hand was working again. They were testing soil on Mars but found no signs of life.
This shows that the people watching from Mars were Tilloo and others, and they did not want Earth to know they existed.

Detailed Summary of the chapter : An Alien Hand
1. Tilloo’s Curiosity About the Secret Passage :Tilloo was a young boy who lived with his parents underground. Their planet was not safe to live on the surface. So, people stayed below the ground in artificial homes. There was a secret passage that Tilloo’s father used every day to go to work on the surface. Tilloo was very curious about where his father went and what was on the surface. He always asked his mother about it.
2. Entering the Forbidden Area :One day, when Tilloo’s father was resting during his afternoon nap (called siesta), Tilloo took his security card. Without his mother noticing, he went to the secret passage. He did just like his father—inserted the card in the slot. The door opened, and he entered. The passage had a soft upward slope and was well-lit. Tilloo hoped to see the sun or stars, which he had only read about. But he could not go far. Hidden machines saw him and sent his picture to the Central Bureau. He was caught within ten steps and brought back home.
3. Father Explains the Truth :Tilloo’s father explained everything kindly. He told Tilloo that normal people could not live on the surface anymore. The air was too thin to breathe, and it was too cold. People would die without protection. His father wore a special suit with oxygen and heat. Their ancestors once lived on the surface, but the sun changed. It became too hot. Birds, animals, and fish died. Only humans survived using smart machines. That’s why they now live underground. His father’s job was to take care of important machines that were still on the surface.
4. A Strange Object in the Sky :Next day, at work, Tilloo’s father saw a strange dot on the big TV screen in the Control Room. It was moving. The computer said it was a spacecraft coming from a nearby planet. Long ago, their people had sent spacecraft in space but found no other life. Now they had no space programme due to energy shortage. Everyone in the Central Committee became serious. The President held a meeting. They found two spacecraft—one was already orbiting their planet. The other was still far.
5. Secret Meeting of the Central Committee :The President asked his team what to do. Number One, who handled defence, said they could destroy the spacecraft. But that would not help. He said there were no living beings inside, only machines. Number Two, a scientist, said they should just watch quietly. Number Three, a social expert, agreed. They didn’t want the spacecraft to know they were there. Their planet already looked lifeless from above, so they decided to stay hidden.
6. Tilloo’s Visit to the Control Room :Later, Tilloo’s father took him to the Control Room. It was a big day for Tilloo. He saw the alien spacecraft on the screen. A mechanical hand came out of the spacecraft. It was touching the soil. Tilloo saw the control panel and its colourful buttons. He could not stop himself and pressed the big red button. The mechanical hand suddenly stopped. Tilloo’s father quickly fixed it, but the damage had already been done.
7. Back on Earth: NASA’s Reaction :On Earth, scientists at NASA were watching the Viking Mission to Mars. Viking 1 was launched on 20 August 1975 and reached Mars on 19 June 1976. Viking 2 was launched on 9 September 1975 and reached Mars on 7 August 1976. In a press meet, they said the mechanical hand had a problem. They didn’t know why. Later, they said it was fixed and they were collecting soil samples. They found no signs of life on Mars.
8. The Real Message :Tilloo and his people were the real Martians. They didn’t want humans to find them. So, they stayed quiet and didn’t let their presence be known. The chapter shows how two worlds came close but still stayed unknown to each other.
