The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) is headquartered at Patancheru located at Hyderabad, Telangana, India. ICRISAT is an international organisation established in the year 1972, with an objective of conducting agricultural research for rural development. ICRISAT is founded by a consortium of organisations convened by the Ford and the Rockefeller foundations. ICRISAT has several regional centres in Bamako and Nairobi and research stations in Niamey, Kano, Lilongwe, Addis Ababa and Bulawayo.

ICRISAT is a non-profit and non-political organisation that conducts agricultural research for development in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa covering 6.5 million kilometres of land in 55 countries.

Vision and Mission-

ICRISAT envisions a prosperous, food-secure and resilient dryland tropics. To achieve this, it has set up a mission to reduce poverty, hunger, malnutrition and environmental degradation in the dryland tropics.

Activities of ICRISAT –

ICRISAT implements research programs in ways that benefit smallholder farmers enabling them and their families to go beyond subsistence farming to produce surpluses that can be stored and sold to markets, paving the way for prosperity in the drylands. The above activity brings out a positive result as listed below –

  1. The surpluses which are stored as food act as a source in times of hunger.
    b. Income from the markets enables farm families to purchase more food when needed.
    c. In addition to this, the farmers can also buy other agricultural inputs such as seeds, fertilizer and livestock thereby helping in the improvement of the farm productivity.
