The Manager

 M/s Span Travels

 New Delhi.

Subject: Asking for the refund

Sir

This is with reference to our reservation for a luxury two-bedroom suite in ‘River View Hotel’, Manali through you in the month of May. When I went to Manali, the manager of that hotel accommodated me in an ordinary room. He told me that the luxury room which I got booked was not vacated by the previous occupant. I told him that my advance booking was confirmed but he did not listen to me and put me off with one excuse or the other.

`Span Travels’ is a big name and such callouts and irresponsible behaviour was not expected from you. It simply means your company is befooling innocent tourists for nothing. We’ll have to rethink to have any further dealings with your firm.

I had to spend three nights in that smelly room in the hotel which in your eyes is not less than a ‘Five Star Hotel’. You must allow me a proportionate refund immediately.

 Yours sincerely,

Prem Sood

‘Girl child needs good education and support’

There used to be the times when the birth of a girl was considered as an ill-omen in the house. The families felt so much disappointed that they cursed their women and even did not provide them required amenities and food. They went on taunting them about the girl and mistreated them. The ladies too had no alternative but to face all the tensions, tortures and troubles helplessly. The girls were debarred even from seeking primary education, especially in the villages. Then, we were slaves and the Britishers took no steps for the upliftment of Indian ladies.

In many parts of the country, girls are still discouraged from going to schools and colleges. They are made to work at homes for fear of sexual harassment of the teenage girls. As a result, a sizable section of the Indian population is deprived of education. In spite of all the progress made in the country, girls are still not treated at par with boys. This is because; all the girls are not given education. Hence, there is an urgent need for the education of girls. Many schemes are being launched now to educate the girls. CBSE scholarship scheme to every single girl child is showing magical results. The government policy of giving free education to girls will revolutionize the society. Girls are outpacing boys in many fields. However, the country will make all round progress only when all girls are highly educated.

 Q.4                                             DISAPPOINTMENT

Vivek was a young man who was in search of a good decent job. Having completed his post-graduation in Mechanical Engineering, he had been waiting for a good job offer. One constraint was his score in his post graduation which was just 60%. He kept applying for jobs but was never considered even for an interview. He had to go for a job because only that way he could give rest to his father. He also had his brother and a sister to educate.

Finally, Vivek was called for an interview. Vivek was very happy and enthusiastic.

On the day of the interview, Vivek dressed smartly and left for the interview. He reached the company in an auto well before time. When Vivek’s turn came, he was called in. The company’s manager greeted him formally, which Vivek reciprocated. The manager took Vivek’s certificate folder and started going through them, questioning him on the topics related to the job. Though Vivek’s replies were correct and satisfactory, the manager nodded his head and said, ” Mr Vivek, sorry I cannot consider you for the job. Your percentage is very less and you don’t seem to have practical knowledge.” Dejected and disappointed, Vivek turned and walked out while the manager watched him through the glass window. As he came out something struck into Vivek’s shoes. He looked down and found it be a pin. Vivek took it in his hand and looked at it attentively. He sat down on a chair in thinking about his future, while working on the pin. In a few minutes, the manager called him and said “You are appointed. I am impressed by what you have made. It’s a great idea, a paper clip from a steel wire!” Vivek looked at what he had made. Yes, it was an innovative paper clip – his new creation!

Q10. Richard Ebright had all the necessary ingredients that are required in the making of a scientist. He had a first-rate mind, was competitive and had the will to win. Above all, he was a great collector and never lost his scientific curiosity. His scientific journey started very early. While he was still in the second grade, he had collected all the species of butterflies found around his hometown. The Travels of Monarch X was the book that changed his life. It opened the world of science to the eager collector. His failure at his first county science fair taught him an important lesson. He learnt that winners do real experiments. One of the most important projects of Richard Ebright was to prove that viceroy butterflies try to look like monarch butterflies. They do so to avoid being eaten by birds. Ebright also proved that twelve tiny gold spots on a monarch pupa produced a hormone that was necessary for the butterfly’s full development. His other project won first place for zoology at the International Fair. It showed that if cells are fed the hormone from the gold spots, they can develop into normal butterfly wing scales. The crowning achievement of Ebright’s brilliant scientific career was his work on the chemical structure of a hormone. He proved that a cell can read the blueprint of its DNA and thus DNA controls heredity and is the blueprint for life.

Richard Ebright looked to Dr Urquhat for fresh ideas and suggestions. The book, The Travels of Monarch X, opened the world of science to him. He sent tagged butterflies to Dr Urquhart for his research works. Dr Urquhart’s new ideas and suggestions helped Ebright to achieve prizes and honours in the county and International Science Fairs.

The hack driver, Bill, who was Oliver Lutkins himself, does help us drawing a character-sketch of Oliver Lutkins. Being a good talker, Bill gave a detailed description of Oliver Lutkins and his activities to the narrator. Bill told the narrator that Lutkins was a hard fellow to be caught. He was always up to something or the other. He was deeply interested in poker. Probably, he was trying to start up a poker game in the back of Fritz’s shop.

Bill told that Oliver Lutkins never paid anybody a cent. He still owed Bill fifty cents on a poker game. Lutkins was not really bad, but it was hard to make him part with his money. Bill also told that Lutkins had a talent for dishonesty. Lutkins’ mother was a terror and he had gone to his mother’s farm to hide behind his mother’s skirts,

Oliver Lutkins’ real character was exposed when his real identity was revealed. Bill was actually acting as Oliver Lutkins. When summons was served, Lutkins and his mother laughed at the narrator as if he were a seven-year-old boy. Lutkins outwitted, outsmarted and outmanoeuvred the narrator. Clever and cunning, Lutkins proved that the gullible narrator was just a novice before a seasoned crook like him.

Q11. A good title should reflect the theme, idea or the traits of a character. It should revolve around any of the above. The story or the play should be woven around any one of them.

In the play — ‘The Book that Saved The Earth’, a book of nursery rhymes of ‘Mother Goose’ is responsible for stopping the Martian invasion on Earth. Think-Tank, the ruler of Mars plans to invade Earth before lunch and sends Probe One to get more information about the Earthlings. They enter a library but can’t figure out what items books are. They take vitamins, increase their intelligence then read the rhymes from ‘Mother Goose’. Think-Tank misinterprets the rhymes, takes them as threats to him and Mars. Scared, he calls back Probe One, drops the idea of invading and escapes with his subjects to Alpha Centauri, a hundred million miles away from Mars.

Thus, the book ‘Mother Goose’ was responsible for stopping the Martian invasion of Earth. The title The Book That Saved the Earth’, reflects the theme of the play, so it is an apt (appropriate) title.

The narrator happened to meet the hack driver on reaching New Mullion. He was Lukens himself. When he came to know the purpose of the narrator’s visit, he offered help in finding Lukens at a charge of two pounds per hour. He was a red-faced, forty-year-old man having a cheerful and pleasant personality. The lawyer liked him at the first look. He was fun-loving and jolly. He played a practical joke on the lawyer. When he came to know that he did not identify Lukens, he introduced himself as Bill. He was neither honest nor helpful. He was rather clever. He charged him for the lunch hour and the food that he got from his wife. But he was creative, humorous and witty. He portrayed the people of New Mullion, in an entertaining and humorous manner reflecting his cheerful wisdom.
