Sub: Increase in road accidents in metros

 Sir

Through the column of your esteemed newspaper, kindly allow me to express my great concern and anxiety at the increase in road accidents in the metropolitan cities of India.

It is quite disturbing that over the last few years there has been a steady increase in the number of people killed in road accidents in our country. In the year 2013, 2014 and 2015, 137,000, 139,671 and 146,000 people died respectively in road accidents in India. Most of these accidents were caused by rash and negligent driving. Drinking and driving have become quite a common feature. The rules of road safety and caution are thrown to the winds. The concerned authorities must give exemplary punishments to the rash and negligent drivers. Drinking and driving can’t go together. The defaulters must be heavily fined or punished. The traffic police must enforce the rules and culture of the road very strictly. Only then our roads will be safe and secure.

 Yours faithfully

The Plight of Animals

Animals have always been victims at the hands of humanity. People turn a blind eye to the ill-treatment meted out to the animals. Since the beginning of civilization, man has believed that animals are his slaves and used them accordingly. He tamed some animals, some were kept as domestic animals and some were hunted for food. This abuse continues in the present day. The circus is still a popular form of entertainment and draws huge crowds. No one really bothers about the pitiable state of those animals. Stray dogs are treated mercilessly everywhere. Many animals stray into populated areas after losing their natural habitat. They also become an easy target. Animals are exploited for selfish interests of man. Chicken, pigs, buffaloes are bred and raised in horrible conditions in factories. We need to spread awareness about this cruelty of mankind to ensure that animals also flourish on this planet.

Q.4                                                   THE SUN AND THE WIND

Once there was an argumentation (debate/dispute) between the sun and the wind as who was stronger and more powerful of the two. The wind boasted of her superior power. She bragged to be stronger than the sun. She said, “You are nothing before me. I am all -powerful’. The sun was humble and gentle all the time. He meekly kept quiet. When the wind challenged him again and again, he agreed to show his real strength.

A test was suggested. A traveller was chosen as the object of the test. It was decided whosoever of the two succeeded to remove the coat of the traveller, he/ she would be declared a winner. There was a toss. The wind won the toss. She out of her haughtiness chose the first tarn for herself. She blew hard and harder. She used all her might to remove the coat of the gentleman. The harder she blew, the more tightly the traveller wrapped his coat around him. The wind got tired because of too much exertion (endeavour). She stopped and gave the chance to the sun.

Now the sun tried to use his power. He shone very brightly. The traveller felt hot. He got uneasy. The sun saw that his shining had the desired effect. He shone more brightly. The traveller was over-perspired. He felt irritation. He could not bear his coat on his person any longer. He removed his coat all at once.

Now the issue had been beautifully resolved. The wind was a loser whereas the sun was the gainer. Ile had won the dispute. He was victorious. The wind had to eat a humble pie. She had to cut a sorry figure.

Moral: Boasters like the wind, lick dust.
