With the largest growing economy in the world, India is on its path to development but it continues to remain home to the largest slum in the world, the Dharavi of Mumbai. The growing population and unregulated urbanization is the greatest challenge facing India. In the present times, more than 65 million people live in slums spread all over the country and outskirts of big cities. The reason for this growth is the uncontrolled migration of people from rural to urban areas as they seek better prospects of employment, education and healthcare facilities. The problem emerges as cities don’t have the capacity to cater to the needs of such large numbers. Therefore these migrants are left to live in slums surrounding the big cities across the country.

Life in a slum is a tragedy where people are forced to live in unhygienic and unhealthy conditions with no legal sanction of any kind. The failed system of drainage and waste management leads to health hazards and medical problems. The houses are so closely packed and small in size that they become a problem for the natural environment. The major problem that these slums create is the growth of crime in society. The frustration and helplessness of people in not being able to earn a living and get a job often forces them to commit crimes and enter a life of disgrace. Women and children are the worst victims. Slum culture forces the youth to take to alcohol and drugs and they lack proper education or guidance.

These problems can only be solved if the government steps in and takes strict measures in controlling the migration of people from rural to the urban area. We need to ensure that they are provided with employment opportunities in rural areas as well. The housing facilities for these slum dwellers are of priority. We need to ensure that the health and education needs of slum dwellers are taken care of. Civil society and municipal corporations need to step in and help. It is well said ‘Initiative is much more powerful than the incentive’.
