Natural calamities have been a cause of great destruction and devastation on the Earth. They are unpredictable in nature and avoiding them is impossible. Earthquakes, floods, droughts and other natural hazards cause tens of thousands of deaths, injuries and economic losses each year around the world. In addition, a large amount of money is spent as humanitarian assistance, emergency loans and development aid.

Protection against natural disasters depends on the type of disaster. For disasters like floods and landslides, plantation of trees is a good long-term solution. On the other hand, there are disasters like lightning or earthquake against which there is not much man can do. No matter what type of disaster we face, we always try to improve our chances of survival. In the case of earthquakes, people are taught to leave their houses and buildings and move towards the open ground. To protect against floods and landslides, measures can be taken on a governmental level. These include passing laws which protect forest cover and prohibit the cutting of trees. Disasters like drought can be avoided by proper planning and allocation of resources. Regions with strong winds have tornadoes with frequent occurrence. We need precautionary measures as tornadoes can be predicted to a great extent this day.

To protect against natural calamities, safety measures need to be taken at all levels. Governments need to play their part by passing laws that can result in safety for people while people themselves need to learn the basic ways of protecting themselves against the natural calamities. Over and above all man needs to ponder on the directionless development that he is practising forcing the nature to take its revenge. The exploitation of nature is the main reason for nature to make us victims of its fury. Unless these unregulated activities stop we will continue to face natural calamities which are often man-made.
