Short Summary of the Chapter: “Who Did Patrick’s Homework?”

Patrick was a boy who hated doing homework. He loved playing hockey, basketball, and Nintendo instead. His teachers warned him that he would not learn anything without doing homework. One day, he saw his cat playing with a little doll. But it was not a doll — it was a tiny man wearing old-fashioned clothes and a tall hat.

The tiny man, who was an elf, begged Patrick to save him. In return, he promised to grant Patrick a wish. Patrick wished that the elf should do all his homework till the end of the semester, which was 35 days. The elf agreed, but he often needed Patrick’s help because he did not know anything about human subjects.

The elf asked Patrick to find words in the dictionary, help with maths, and bring books from the library. Patrick had to stay up late, guide the elf, and work very hard. In the end, Patrick got A’s in all his subjects. His teachers, parents, and classmates were surprised to see his new attitude.

Patrick thought the elf had done his homework, but the truth was that Patrick himself had worked hard and learned a lot.

Detailed Summary of the Chapter: “Who Did Patrick’s Homework?”

1. Patrick Hates Homework  :Patrick was a boy who never liked doing homework. He found it very boring. He loved playing hockey, basketball, and Nintendo games instead of studying. His teachers warned him again and again that he would not learn anything without doing homework. Sometimes, Patrick also felt that he was becoming an ignoramus, which means an uneducated person. But still, he did not like to study or complete his homework.

2. Patrick Finds a Tiny Man  :One day, Patrick saw his cat playing with something strange. When he grabbed it from the cat, he saw that it was not a doll. It was a tiny man, wearing a little wool shirt, short trousers (called britches), and a tall, witch-like hat. The tiny man cried out and begged Patrick to save him from the cat. He promised Patrick that he would grant him one wish if he saved him.

3. Patrick Makes a Wish :Patrick felt very lucky. He immediately made his wish. He asked the tiny man to do all his homework till the end of the semester, which was 35 days. Patrick also said that if the elf did a good job, he could even get A grades. The tiny man was very unhappy but agreed to help Patrick.

4. The Elf’s Sad Face :The little man’s face became wrinkled like a dishcloth thrown in a hamper. He kicked his legs, made angry and sad faces, and pursed his lips tightly. He felt cursed but still kept his promise. He agreed to do Patrick’s homework even though he clearly didn’t like it.

5. The Elf Needs Help  :The elf started doing Patrick’s homework, but there was a small problem. The elf did not know much about human subjects. Every now and then, he would shout, “Help me! Help me!” He would ask Patrick to find meanings of words from the dictionary and read them out, letter by letter. The elf was very confused and needed help at every step.

6. Patrick Works Harder :In maths, the elf became very worried. He did not know anything about tables, addition, subtraction, division, or fractions. He would scream loudly and ask Patrick to sit beside him and guide him. When it came to history, the elf shouted even louder. He asked Patrick to bring more and more books from the library and help him read. Patrick had no choice but to help him all the time.

7. Patrick Becomes Tired :Because of helping the elf so much, Patrick started working harder than ever before. He stayed up late at night and became very tired. His eyes became puffy and red. He started going to school feeling very sleepy and weary. Doing homework had become a big drag for Patrick, but he continued working hard.

8. The Elf Leaves Quietly :At last, the semester ended and the final day of school arrived. Now there was no more homework left to do. The tiny elf, without making any noise, slipped out quietly from the back door. He did not say goodbye or thank you to Patrick.

9. Patrick’s Great Success :Patrick got A grades in all his subjects. His classmates were amazed to see his results. His teachers smiled and praised him a lot. His parents were also very happy. They noticed a big change in Patrick. He cleaned his room, did all his household chores, and behaved politely. It looked like he had developed a completely new and good attitude.

10. The Real Secret :Patrick thought that it was the tiny man who had done all his homework. But the real truth is different. Actually, Patrick himself had done all the hard work without realising it. Helping the elf made Patrick study and work harder, which brought his success.
