Short Summary of the Chapter: What Happened to the Reptiles

This story is about a boy named Prem. One day, a terrible fight started in his village because of a temple or mosque burning in a far-off place. People became violent. Many houses, including Prem’s, were burnt. So, Prem ran away and reached a peaceful village called Pambupatti, near a forest.

An old man there took care of Prem. He told him a story about reptiles in the forest. Long ago, only reptiles lived in the forest—like snakes, crocodiles, tortoises, and lizards. Their leader was a powerful crocodile named Makara.

Makara became bossy. First, he told the tortoises to leave, saying they were slow and useless. Then he made the snakes go away, calling them dangerous. Later, he also sent the lizards away because they changed colours.

At first, everything seemed fine. But soon, big problems started. The forest smelled bad. Rats and insects took over. There were no eggs or baby animals. Even baby crocodiles were eaten by frogs!

Finally, a baby crocodile said what everyone was thinking. They understood that Makara was wrong. So, they called all the reptiles back. In two months, the forest became normal again.

Prem realized that his village needed this story. He wanted to go back and tell people that everyone is important, and we should live peacefully together, like in Pambupatti.

Detailed Summary of the Chapter: What Happened to the Reptiles

Prem Runs from His Village: Prem is the boy who tells this story. He lived many hundred miles away from a village called Pambupatti. One day, in his own village, something bad happened. A temple or mosque was burnt in some faraway place. But the people of his village started fighting badly. There was hate, shouting, and even fire. Prem’s house also got burnt. He packed a few clothes, some coins, and his little Ganesh idol, and ran away. He walked, took a train and a bus without tickets, and finally reached Pambupatti. There, he fainted near a well.

A Kind Old Man Helps Prem: When Prem opened his eyes, he saw an old man with white hair and kind eyes. This man took care of him. He gave Prem food and water and even rubbed his tired feet. Many villagers came to see Prem. He felt surprised because the people in this village were very kind and peaceful. They didn’t fight about religion.

Prem Hears a Story: One day, Prem asked the old man why the people here were so different. The old man smiled and said, “I will tell you a story about Pambupatti. Maybe you can take it back to your village.”

Long Ago — A Forest of Reptiles: The old man began the story. He said that many, many years ago, there were no other animals in Pambupatti forest — only reptiles. There were crocodiles, snakes, lizards, and tortoises. Every month, they held a big meeting. The leader was a big and strong crocodile named Makara.

Makara Misuses His Power: One day, Makara sent a letter to the tortoises, telling them not to come to the next meeting. Then he told all the reptiles that the tortoises were slow and useless. He made them leave the forest. Soon, rotten smell started coming because there was no one to eat dead fruit and animals. The tortoises were needed!

Next, Makara sent out the snakes. He said they were slimy and scary. Everyone stayed silent because they were scared of Makara. But without snakes, the rats took over the forest and made life terrible. They even ate eggs of other reptiles.

After that, Makara said that lizards were strange because they changed colours. He forced them to leave too. Without lizards, the insects became too many. Big frogs ate baby crocodiles. The forest became dirty and scary.

A Baby Crocodile Speaks Up: One day, a small crocodile finally said, “It all started with the tortoises!” Makara got nervous and tried to stop him. But now, all the reptiles knew Makara was wrong. He wasn’t wise. He just wanted power.

Everyone Comes Back: The crocodiles quickly sent messages to the tortoises, snakes, and lizards to come back. All the reptiles returned with their families. In just two months, the forest became clean and peaceful again. Everyone was happy.

Prem Learns a Lesson: Prem listened to the full story and thought deeply. He told the old man, “Maybe I should go back to my village and tell this story.” The old man smiled and said, “Yes, tell it again and again. One day, people will understand.”

This chapter teaches us that everyone is important. We should not throw anyone out just because they are different. Peace and kindness make life beautiful — just like in Pambupatti.
