Short Summary of the Poem: Vocation
This poem is about a young child who goes to school every day. At ten in the morning, while walking through the lane, he sees a hawker selling crystal bangles. The hawker walks freely, without any hurry, and no one tells him where to go. The child wishes he could also be like the hawker and roam the streets all day.
At four in the afternoon, when the child returns from school, he sees a gardener digging the ground. The gardener gets dirty in the dust, works in the sun or rain, and still, no one scolds him. The child wishes to be like the gardener who can work freely and happily.
At night, when the child is sent to bed, he looks out of the window and sees a watchman walking in the dark street. The watchman carries a lantern, and his shadow moves with him. The child feels that the watchman never sleeps and walks all night. He wishes to be like the watchman and walk freely in the night.
This poem shows how children wish for freedom and dream of doing things on their own, just like the people they see every day.

1. The Child Sees the Hawker (Morning โ 10 oโclock): The poem begins when the child is going to school at ten oโclock in the morning.
