He sent messengers all over his kingdom and promised a big reward to anyone who could answer. Many wise men came but gave different answers. The king was not happy with any answer.

Then he decided to meet a wise hermit who lived alone in a forest. The king dressed like a simple man and went to meet him. The hermit was digging the ground. The king asked his questions, but the hermit did not answer. The king helped him by digging the ground.

After some time, a bearded man came running with a wound. The king cleaned and bandaged his wound and stayed with him through the night. In the morning, the man said he was the king’s enemy but now wanted to be his friend.

The king forgave him and promised to send his doctor and servants to help him. Before leaving, the king again asked the hermit for answers. The hermit said that the most important time is now, the most important person is the one you are with, and the most important work is to do good to that person. Detailed Summary of the chapter : Three Questions

The King’s Three Questions :Once there was a king who thought of three very important questions. He believed that if he knew the answers, he would never fail in life. His three questions were: What is the right time to do something? Who are the most important people? What is the most important thing to do? These questions were very important because the king wanted to be a good ruler and make the best decisions.

The Search for Answers :The king sent messengers all over his kingdom. He promised to give a big reward to anyone who could answer his questions. Many wise men came to the king. But their answers were all different. Some said he should follow a timetable. Some said he needed a council of wise men. Others said he should ask magicians who could tell the future. For the second question, some said the king’s councillors were most important. Some said priests, some said doctors, and some said soldiers. For the third question, some said science was most important, some said fighting, and some said religious worship. The king was confused and not satisfied with any answer.

The Visit to the Hermit :The king decided to meet a wise hermit who lived in a forest. The hermit was known for his wisdom. He lived simply and met only common people. The king wore ordinary clothes and went to meet him alone, leaving his horse and bodyguard behind. When the king reached, the hermit was digging the ground. The king asked his three questions, but the hermit stayed silent and continued digging. Seeing that the hermit was old and tired, the king offered to help by digging the ground himself.

The Arrival of the Wounded Man :While the king was digging, a bearded man came running towards them. He was badly wounded and bleeding from his stomach. The king cleaned his wound and bandaged it. Even after bandaging, the blood kept flowing, so the king redressed the wound again and again. Finally, the bleeding stopped. The king gave the man water to drink. They stayed with him in the hut for the whole night.

The Truth About the Bearded Man :The next morning, the wounded man woke up and said sorry to the king. He told the king that he was actually his enemy. The man said that the king had once punished his brother and taken away his property. So, he had planned to kill the king when he was returning from the hermit’s hut. But the king’s bodyguard had attacked him instead. The man said that because the king had saved his life, he would now serve the king faithfully. The king forgave him happily and also promised to send his own doctor and servants to look after him. He also said that he would return his property.

The Hermit’s Answers :Before leaving, the king once again asked the hermit for answers to his three questions. The hermit explained the meaning through the king’s own experience. He said the most important time is *now*, because it is the only time we have to do anything. The most important person is *the one you are with at that moment*, because we never know what will happen in the future. The most important work is *to do good to the person you are with*, because that is the purpose for which we are sent into this world.
