Short Summary of the Chapter: The Friendly Mongoose

A farmer and his wife lived in a village with their small son. They loved their son very much. One day, the farmer said they should have a pet to be a companion for their child. His wife agreed. The farmer brought home a baby mongoose. His wife said that it was small now but would grow up soon to be a good friend for their son.

In five or six months, the mongoose became fully grown. It had shiny black eyes and a bushy tail. But the farmer’s son was still a small baby in his cradle. One day, the farmer’s wife had to go to the market. She fed the baby, rocked him to sleep, and told her husband to look after him. She was a little scared to leave the baby alone with the mongoose. But the farmer said the mongoose was very friendly.

After a while, the farmer also left for the fields. He met some friends and did not return soon. When the farmer’s wife came back from the market, she saw the mongoose sitting at the door. His mouth and paws were covered with blood. She thought the mongoose had killed her baby. In anger, she hit the mongoose with her heavy grocery basket.

Then she ran inside and found her baby sleeping safely in the cradle. Nearby, she saw a black snake lying dead and bleeding. She understood everything. The mongoose had killed the snake to save her child. She ran back to the mongoose, crying and saying sorry. But the poor mongoose was already dead. She had acted without thinking and killed the faithful animal.

Detailed Summary of the Chapter: The Friendly Mongoose

A Happy Family and a New Idea: Once, a farmer and his wife lived in a small village. They had a little baby boy. They loved him very much. One day, the farmer said to his wife, “We must get a pet. When our son grows up, he will need a companion.” A companion means a good friend. His wife liked this idea.
A New Member: The Baby Mongoose: One evening, the farmer brought home a tiny baby mongoose. His wife saw it and said, “It is very small now but will soon grow up.” They thought the mongoose would become a good friend for their son. The mongoose started living with them in the house.

Growing Up Together: In five or six months, the mongoose grew into a full-sized animal. It had two shining black eyes and a thick, bushy tail. The farmer’s son was still very small and stayed in his cradle. A cradle is a small bed for babies where they sleep or lie down.

The Farmer’s Wife Goes to the Market: One day, the farmer’s wife needed to go to the market. She fed her baby and rocked him to sleep in his cradle. Before leaving, she told the farmer, “Please take care of the baby. I do not like to leave him alone with the mongoose.” She was a little scared. But the farmer said, “You don’t need to worry. The mongoose is very friendly. He is like our own child.”

The Farmer Leaves the House: After his wife left, the farmer also went out to look at his fields. On the way, he met some friends and stayed with them for some time. This means no one was at home with the baby and the mongoose.

A Shocking Sight: When the farmer’s wife came back from the market carrying a heavy basket of groceries, she saw the mongoose at the door. The mongoose ran to greet her. But when she looked closely, she saw blood on his face and paws. She screamed loudly, thinking the mongoose had killed her baby.

A Hasty and Wrong Decision: The farmer’s wife was very angry and scared. Without thinking, she hit the mongoose hard with the heavy basket. The mongoose fell down dead. She did not even check the baby before punishing the mongoose.

The Truth is Discovered: Then she rushed inside the house. To her surprise, she saw her baby sleeping safely in the cradle. On the floor, there was a black snake lying dead. The mongoose had fought with the snake and saved her child’s life.

Feeling Sad and Sorry: The farmer’s wife quickly ran outside. She touched the mongoose and cried, “Oh! You saved my child. What have I done?” But it was too late. The faithful mongoose was already dead. She had killed him because of her quick and wrong thinking.
