SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE RULES AND EXERCISES

TENSES

The Tenses of a verb are the various forms that indicate primarily a relationship of events in time.

Read the following sentences:

1. He is singing a song.

2. He sang a song in the party.

3. He will sing a song in the party.

All three sentences refer to the act of ‘singing’ at three different points of time.

Sentence (1) refers to an action which takes place now at Present.

Sentence (2) refers to an action which took place sonic time ago in the Past.

Sentence (3) refers to an action which will take place in Future.

Hence, we conclude the Tense Form of a verb shows when an action takes place. or a state. or a thing exists. There are three Tenses:

(1) Present Tense,

(2) Past Tense,

(3) Future Tense.

It is not enough to say that an action takes place in Present. We want to know that at what stage the action is at the time of speaking. For this purpose each Tense is sub-divided into Four heads:

The Simple Present Tense

 Simple Present Tense expresses the indefinite state of the action. It does not tell us whether the action is happening at the time of speaking or has been completed.

 Form :

StatementIst form of verb + do not Ist form +s/es+ does not
Negative Ist form +do+ subject Ist form + does+subject
Interrogative Ist form………..? Ist form : ?

Simple Present Tense is used:

(a) To describe Repeated and Habitual actions:

1.She……………… (go)out for a walk every day.

  She goes out for a walk every day.

2.He……………. (Not take) tea in the evening.

 He does not take tea in the evening.

3.You…………. (go) for a walk daily ?

Do you go for a walk daily?

In such cases seine adverbs like always, never , seldom, often, sometimes, daily ,regularly , usually, every day , every week, every month, once a week , twice a week etc. or some adverb phrase is normally given in the sentence.

(b) To express General truth i.e., a fact which is true of all times:

1.The sun………. (rise) in the east.

The sun rises in the east.

2.The earth……….. (move) round the sun.

The earth moves round the sun.

(c) To express a Permanent truth:

1.Agra…………… (stand) on the bank of the Yamuna.

Agra stands on the bank of the Yamuna.

2.This road ……….. (lead) to the hospital .

 This road leads to the hospital.

(d) In Sub-Adverb Clause when the Principal Clause is in Future Tense :

1.If she………. (work) hard. she will pass.

If she works hard, she will pass.

2.When he…………. (come). I shall leave this scat for him.

 When he comes, I shall lo we this seat for him.
