Short Summary of the chapter: How the Camel got his hump
In the beginning, when the world was new, animals started working for humans. There was a Camel who lived in the middle of a Howling Desert. He did not want to work. Whenever anyone spoke to him, he only said “Humph!”
On Monday, the Horse came and asked the Camel to trot. The Camel said “Humph!” and did not move. Then the Dog came and asked him to fetch and carry, but the Camel again said “Humph!” The Ox came next and asked him to plough, but the Camel still said “Humph!” All three animals went and told the Man.
The Man said they must work double because the Camel would not work. The Horse, Dog, and Ox became very angry. They held a meeting near the desert. The Camel laughed at them and again said “Humph!”
Then the Djinn of All Deserts came rolling in a cloud of dust. The animals complained to him. The Djinn said it was wrong to be idle and promised to deal with the Camel.
The Djinn found the Camel looking at his reflection in a pool. He asked why the Camel was not working. The Camel said “Humph!” again and again. Suddenly, a big hump grew on the Camel’s back.
The Djinn told the Camel that the hump was his punishment. Now he could work without eating for three days by living on his hump. The Camel had to go and join the other animals.
From that day, the Camel has always had a hump and has never learned to behave properly.

2. Horse, Dog, and Ox Try to Make Him Work :On Monday morning, the Horse came to the Camel with a saddle on his back. He asked the Camel to trot like the other animals. The Camel said “Humph!” and did nothing. Then the Dog came with a stick in his mouth. He asked the Camel to fetch and carry like others. Again, the Camel said “Humph!” and refused. Later, the Ox came with a yoke on his neck. He asked the Camel to plough the fields like the rest. The Camel still said “Humph!” and stayed lazy. All three animals were very upset and went to tell the Man about it.
3. Animals Had to Work Double :At the end of the day, the Man called the Horse, Dog, and Ox. He said, “Three, O Three, I am very sorry, but the Camel will not work. So you must work double to make up for him.” This made the three animals very angry. They held a panchayat, which means a meeting, at the edge of the Desert. While they were talking, the Camel came there chewing his cud. He laughed at them and said “Humph!” again before walking away.
4. The Djinn Comes to Help :While the animals were upset, the Djinn of All Deserts came, rolling in a cloud of dust. The Horse spoke to him and complained about the lazy Camel. He told the Djinn that the Camel had not worked since Monday morning. The Djinn agreed that being idle was wrong. He promised to handle the Camel and teach him a lesson.
5. The Djinn Punishes the Camel :The Djinn rolled himself in his dust-cloak and walked across the Desert. He found the Camel looking at his reflection in a pool of water. The Djinn asked the Camel why he was not working. The Camel did not answer properly and just said “Humph!” again and again. The Djinn warned him not to say it again.
