Short Summary of the Chapter: Fair Play
Jumman Shaikh and Algu Chowdhry were very good friends. They lived in the same village. They helped each other when needed. Jumman had an old aunt. She gave him her property because he promised to take care of her.
For a few years, Jumman and his family treated her well. Then they got tired of her. Jumman’s wife gave her less food and behaved badly. Jumman also became careless. The aunt felt hurt and asked for a monthly allowance. Jumman refused. So, she decided to take her case to the village panchayat.
The old lady asked Algu to support her. Algu was worried as Jumman was his friend. But he agreed to speak the truth. In the panchayat, Jumman’s aunt chose Algu as the head Panch. Algu listened carefully and decided that Jumman must pay a monthly allowance to his aunt or return her property.
This decision broke their friendship. Jumman became angry and wanted revenge.
After some time, Algu faced a problem. His bullock died. He sold the second bullock to Samjhu Sahu, who promised to pay after a month. But the bullock died soon. Sahu refused to pay Algu.
Algu also took his case to the panchayat. This time, Sahu chose Jumman as the head Panch. Algu felt sad. But Jumman, as Panch, forgot his anger and gave a fair decision. He said Sahu must pay Algu because the bullock was healthy at the time of sale.
Hearing this, Algu was very happy. Both friends hugged each other. They understood that a Panch must do justice, not support friends or enemies.
