Life is Unprofitable

Read the following passages and answer the questions given at the end of each:

Trees give shade for the benefit of others, while they themselves stand in the sun and endure the scorching heat. They produce fruit by which others profit. The character of a good man is like that of trees. What is the use of this perishable body if it is not used for the benefit of mankind? The more sandalwood is rubbed, the more scent it gives. The more sugar cane is peeled and cut into pieces, the more juice it produces. The more gold is burnt, the more brightly it shines. Noble people do not lose their qualities even by losing their lives. What does it matter whether man praises them or not? What difference does it make whether riches abide with them or not? What does it matter whether they die at this moment or their lives are prolonged? Come what may, those who tread on the right path will not set foot on any other.
