On one pretext or the other, the government announces holidays. Approximately 170 days in a year our offices are closed. India is a country of multiple religions, cultures and races. It has become a political issue to declare holidays in reverence of those religious and political leaders. Is it proper? Is this the only way to pay homage to them? Write a speech on “Too Many Holidays Make Our Government Machinery Slow”.

 Ans. Dear Friends

`Too Many Government Holidays’ is the theme of my talk today. Approximately 170 days in a year our offices are closed. To celebrate anniversaries of our religious/political leaders, holidays are declared and it has become a political issue. Holidays strike down work and the society suffers. Imagine, if a person has an important job in a Government department and the offices are closed for five days at a stretch. What mental agony it can cause him!

Holidays reinvigorate, but too many make one inactive and lethargic. We enjoy holidays in reverence of those who died while serving that country. Is this the only way to pay homage? It is sheer foolishness. Frequent holidays irk the general public as they suffer the most. Keeping offices closed for days together is unjustified.

Those very leaders and saints, for whom we declare holidays, preached and practised hard work. So are we doing justice to them by observing holidays in their memory? I don’t think so. I feel that the Government should rethink this policy of declaring holidays in the memory of these leaders. If anything, we should work even harder on those days—that will be a true homage to those departed great souls! Thank You.
