WRESTLING

Read the following passage carefully.                                                                                     

(1)          Deepak, the fifth name that the thief in the story had given to himself to mislead people and escape being caught, meets Arun at a wrestling match. To win over Arun, Deepak asked if he would have the honour of working for him, to which Arun, who had an irregular source of income, replied that he did not have money to pay. Taken aback initially, Deepak collected himself and asked Arun if he was in a position to feed him. Thus, taking Arun into his confidence. Deepak makes his way into the dwelling of Arun. A simple and honest person by nature, Arun did not mind the first bad meal cooked by Deepak. Instead, he encouraged Deepak by telling him that he would teach him how to cook.

(2)          By and by Deepak settled in the household. He attended to the household chores, cooked food and shelter. A thief as he was, Deepak could not desist from occasionally making money when buying the daily supplies. Once Deepak saw Arun keep a thick wad of notes under his pillow, at night. Understandably. Arun had earned a handsome amount. Treachery overcame Deepak, who made up his mind that he would steal the money at night when Arun was fast asleep. As planned, when Arun was fast asleep, Deepak quietly entered the room and stole the money.

(3)          Deepak hurriedly made his way towards the station and reached just in time to catch the Amritsar Express as planned. Just as he was about to step onto the footboard to board the train, something inexplicable overcame him, and he was left standing all alone on the platform. Undecided what to do, Deepak was overcome with guilt; his conscience pricked him, and he wondered if it was right to rob a person who had been so understanding and sympathetic. This guilt impelled him to return to Arun. but he was extremely worried. He knew that it was easier to steal something than to put it back undetected. Nevertheless. Deepak returned and kept the money back from where he had stolen it, without being noticed by Arun. who was seemingly asleep.

(4)          Deepak overslept the next morning, and when he woke up, he found that tea was ready, and Arun was giving him a five-rupee note, telling him that then onwards Deepak would be paid regularly. But his guilt, and the fact that everything had been discovered stopped Deepak from meeting Arun’s gaze.
