Thinking about the Poem

1.1. What kind of place is Innisfree? Think about it:

Ans. Innisfree is a beautiful and lovely Island. It is a place full of natural beauty, peace and calmness.

(i) the three things do the poet want to do when he goes back there? (Stanza I);

Ans. (i) He will build a small cabin with clay and woods.

 (ii) He will plant nine bean-row.

(iii) He will make a hive for the honey bee.

(ii).What does the poet hear and see there when he visits and is its effect on him? (Stanza II);

Ans. At midnight the poet sees the whole Island glimmering. He hears the sweet music of a cricket. He also sees small birds flying and making noises in the evening sky. It gives a feeling of peace to his heart.

(iii) What he heard in his “heart’s core” even when he is far away from Innisfree? (Stanza III);

Ans. The poet hears the lake water lapping against the shore rocks in his “‘heart’s core”

 2. By now you may have concluded that Innisfree is a simple, natural place, full of beauty and peace. How does the poet contrast it with where he now stands?

Ans. The poet is standing on a roadside way in London. It is a place full of noise and pollution. In this way, he contrasts this place to Innisfree Island.

3. Do you think Innisfree is only a place or a state of mind? Does the poet actually miss the place of his boyhood days?

Ans. Innisfree is both an actual place and also a state of mind. The poet had spent his childhood in Innisfree. Now he lives in a big city which is far away from the natural beauty of Innisfree. lie longs to go back to that place of peace and beauty forever.

II.1. Look at the words the poet uses to describe what he sees and hears at Innisfree

(i) Bee-loud glade

(ii) Evenings full of the linnet’s wings

Ans. (i) Bee-loud glade: The poet hears the pleasing noise of the bees in the orchard of Innisfree Island.

(ii) Evenings full of the linnet’s wings: The poet secs that at the evening time the sky of Innisfree Island is filled with small singing birds.

(iii) Lake water lapping with low sounds: The picture of the water lapping against the shore rocks comes to his mind and from the very core of his heart he listens to that music.
