Short summary of chapter: Bepin Choudhury’s Lapse of Memory
Bepin Choudhury was a serious and lonely man. Every Monday, he went to Kalicharan’s bookshop in New Market. One day, a man named Parimal Ghose told him they had met in Ranchi in 1958. But Bepin was sure he had never been to Ranchi.
Parimal said many things about the Ranchi trip — like a fall at Hudroo falls, a cut on the knee, and meeting Dinesh Mukerji. Bepin became confused. He checked his knee and found a mark. He called Dinesh, and Dinesh said Bepin was really in Ranchi in October 1958.
He even asked his old friend Chunilal, who also confirmed the Ranchi trip. Bepin got scared and went to a doctor, Dr Chanda. The doctor suggested going to Ranchi again to try to remember.
In Ranchi, nothing looked familiar. At Hudroo Falls, Bepin fainted. He returned home and got a letter from Chunilal. The letter told the truth. Bepin never went to Ranchi. Chunilal had played a trick on him because Bepin did not help him in need.
Bepin then lied to Dr Chanda, saying his memory came back.

Detailed summary of chapter: Bepin Choudhury’s Lapse of Memory
A Usual Visit to the Bookshop : Every Monday, Bepin Choudhury went to Kalicharan’s bookshop in New Market. He loved reading crime and ghost stories. One day, in 1958, a man named Parimal Ghose met him there. He told Bepin that they had spent time together in Ranchi. But Bepin was shocked. He said he had never been to Ranchi.
Strange Details from a Stranger :Parimal Ghose told many personal details about Bepin. He said Bepin had hurt his knee at Hudroo Falls, had no children, and had lost his wife 10 years ago. He also said Bepin didn’t want to visit the mental hospital in Ranchi because his brother had died there.
Bepin thought all this was very strange. He had a good memory. How could he forget a whole trip to Ranchi?
Doubt and Confusion Begins :Bepin sat in his car and tried to relax. He even looked at his right knee and saw a cut. He got more confused. Could the man be right? He remembered that he had spent Puja in 1958 with a friend in Kanpur, but that friend had gone to Japan and could not be contacted now.
A Call to Dinesh Mukerji :Bepin remembered that Parimal had mentioned Dinesh Mukerji. So, Bepin called him. Dinesh clearly said that Bepin was with him in Ranchi in October 1958. This made Bepin very worried. He could not believe he had forgotten such a big thing.
Trying to Find the Truth :Later, Bepin asked his old friend Chunilal about it. Chuni said he had arranged Bepin’s train tickets to Ranchi and even saw him off at the station. Bepin was now sure he had lost his memory. He visited Dr Paresh Chanda, a young doctor.
A Trip to Ranchi :The doctor advised Bepin to visit Ranchi again. Bepin went to Ranchi the next day. But nothing seemed familiar — not the roads, not the people, not even Hudroo Falls. At Hudroo Falls, he fainted.
The Big Surprise :Back home in Calcutta, he got a letter from Chunilal. The letter said that Bepin never went to Ranchi. Chuni had played this trick to teach him a lesson. Bepin had not helped Chuni in his hard times, so Chuni used his imagination to fool Bepin.
A Clever Ending :When Dr Chanda visited again, Bepin lied. He said that he had remembered everything after reaching Ranchi. He even asked for a painkiller for the fall he never had.
This story shows how guilt, loneliness, and lack of kindness can sometimes lead to confusion and regret.
