Short Summary of the chapter : A Gift of Chapals

Mridu was a young girl living in Madras (now Chennai) with her grandparents, Tapi and Thatha. One day, Tapi took her to her aunt Rukku Manni’s house. There, Mridu met her cousins, Lalli, Ravi, and Meena.

Ravi quickly took Mridu to the backyard, where they showed her a small kitten hidden in a torn football. They had named the kitten Mahendran. Ravi said Mahendran was special and told funny stories about how he was related to ancient cats and even lions.

Suddenly, they heard a weird sound from the house. It was Lalli learning to play the violin. Mridu quietly watched from the window. Lalli was struggling, while her music master played smoothly and beautifully.

Soon, a beggar came to the house. Rukku Manni asked Ravi to send him away because he came every day. The children saw that the beggar had sore feet and no slippers. They felt sorry for him. They wanted to help.

Ravi found a pair of old, dusty slippers in the verandah and gave them to the beggar. The beggar blessed them and went away happily.

Later, the music master started looking for his missing slippers. It turned out the old slippers belonged to him! Rukku Manni was very angry but managed the situation by giving the music master a pair of new slippers belonging to Gopu Mama.

At the end, Rukku Manni laughed, wondering what Gopu Mama would say when he found out.

Detailed Summary of the chapter : A Gift of Chapals

1. Mridu Visits Rukku Manni’s House  :Mridu lived with her grandparents, Tapi and Thatha, in Madras, which is now called Chennai. One afternoon, Tapi took Mridu to her aunt Rukku Manni’s house. There, Mridu met her cousins — Lalli, Ravi, and Meena. As she entered, she carefully placed her slippers next to a dusty, old pair of large black slippers. She did not get much time to think about them because Ravi quickly pulled her towards the backyard.

2. The Secret Kitten in the Backyard  :In the backyard, hidden behind a bitter-berry bush, the children had kept a small kitten. The kitten was drinking milk from a coconut shell. Ravi and Meena told Mridu that they had found it that morning near the gate. They kept it a secret because their grandmother, Paati, would not allow a cat in the house. Ravi explained how difficult it was to get milk for the kitten without getting caught by Paati.

3. Mahendran – The Special Cat  :Ravi proudly said that the kitten’s name was Mahendran, short for Mahendravarma Pallava Poonai. He told funny and grand stories, saying Mahendran was related to ancient royal cats and lions. He spoke about the Pallava kings and Mahabalipuram, trying to impress Mridu. Though Mridu and Meena found it funny, they listened to him. Ravi loved talking and showing off his knowledge of history.

4. Lalli’s Violin Practice  :Suddenly, a strange loud sound came from inside the house. The kitten got scared and ran into a tray of chillies. Mridu was surprised too. Ravi explained that it was Lalli trying to learn the violin. Mridu peeked through the window and saw Lalli struggling to play. The music-master played his violin smoothly, but Lalli’s music was full of mistakes, like a train going off the track.

5. A Beggar Arrives  :While the children were busy, a beggar came to the house. He had been coming daily for the past week. Rukku Manni asked Ravi to send him away. The beggar sat under a neem tree and looked very tired. His feet were full of blisters from walking barefoot on the hot tar road. Seeing his painful condition, the children felt very sorry for him and wanted to help him.

6. Helping the Beggar  :The children thought of giving him some slippers. They searched the house but could not find any old slippers that would fit him. Then Mridu remembered the old dusty slippers she had seen at the door. They decided to give those slippers to the beggar. The slippers belonged to the music-master, but they thought the beggar needed them more. Ravi handed over the slippers, and the beggar happily wore them and left, blessing the children.

7. Music-Master’s Missing Slippers  :After some time, the music-master came out and started looking for his slippers. He became upset because they were missing. He told everyone that he had bought them from Mount Road after spending a whole month’s fee. Rukku Manni got worried and asked the children if they had seen anyone near the verandah. Mridu, feeling guilty, told her about the beggar’s blistered feet and the slippers.

8. Rukku Manni Solves the Problem  :Rukku Manni was angry but did not scold the children much. She quickly went inside and brought out Gopu Mama’s new, hardly-used slippers. She gave them to the music-master, who was very happy but tried not to show it too much. The music-master wore them and left, complaining about how naughty children had no respect these days. Rukku Manni did not like him calling Ravi a monkey, even if he mentioned Hanuman.

9. Ending on a Happy Note  :After the music-master left, Rukku Manni called Mridu and Meena for tiffin. She started laughing, thinking about how Gopu Mama would react when he found out that his new slippers had been given to the music-master. The story ended happily, showing how small acts of kindness by children can sometimes create funny problems.
