Short Summary of the Chapter: A Different Kind of School

The writer had heard a lot about Miss Beam’s school. One day, he got a chance to visit it. At the school, he saw a girl with her eyes covered with a bandage. A younger boy was helping her walk carefully.  

Miss Beam was a kind and understanding lady. She explained that her school taught children to be thoughtful and kind. The children were taught simple lessons like spelling, adding, and writing. The main aim was to teach them to care for others.  

Miss Beam showed him the playground. He saw many children who looked blind, lame, or injured. Miss Beam told him that it was part of their learning. Every child had to spend one day as blind, lame, deaf, injured, or dumb.  

On the blind day, children’s eyes were bandaged, and they had to depend on others. This made them understand the pain of people who suffer. The writer spoke to a blindfolded girl. She said it was very difficult and scary to be blind.  

The girl said that hopping on one leg or being deaf was easier. Being blind was the hardest. She was happy that the day would end soon.  

The writer realised that helping and describing things made him more thoughtful. He praised Miss Beam’s system. She smiled and said it was working well.

Detailed Summary of the Chapter: A Different Kind of School

Visit to Miss Beam’s School :The writer had heard a lot about Miss Beam’s school. But he got a chance to visit it only last week. When he reached the school, he saw a girl about twelve years old. Her eyes were covered with a bandage. A little boy, four years younger, was helping her walk carefully. The girl asked the boy about the visitor, and the boy seemed to describe him.

Meeting Miss Beam :The writer met Miss Beam. She was middle-aged, had a plump figure, and her hair was turning grey. She looked very kind and friendly. The writer asked her about her way of teaching. She said they taught only simple things like spelling, adding, subtracting, multiplying, and writing. Most learning was through reading and interesting talks.

Real Aim of the School :Miss Beam told him that the real aim of the school was to teach thoughtfulness, kindness, and being responsible. She asked him to look outside the window. The writer saw a big garden and a playground. He saw many happy children but also noticed that some children looked unhealthy. Some were blindfolded, some were using crutches, and some looked lame.

Special Days for Children :Miss Beam laughed and explained that the children were not really sick. It was a part of their learning. Every child had one blind day, one lame day, one deaf day, one injured day, and one dumb day in a term. On the blind day, their eyes were covered with bandages. They promised not to peep. It was done so that they could understand the pain of others.

Talking to a Blindfolded Girl :Miss Beam took the writer to a girl whose eyes were covered. The writer talked to her. He asked if she ever peeped. The girl said, “No,” because it would be cheating. She told him that being blind was very scary. She always felt afraid of hitting something. It was a big relief to sit down safely.

Different Experiences of Difficult Days :The girl said her helpers were fairly kind but not very careful. She said those who had already experienced blindness were better helpers. She thought hopping on a crutch was almost fun, and being deaf was not too bad. But being blind was the hardest and very frightening.

Walking Together :The girl asked the writer to take her for a little walk. She requested him to describe everything. As they walked in the playground, the writer told her that Miss Beam was walking with a tall girl wearing a blue skirt and a pink blouse. The girl guessed it was Millie, the Head Girl.  

Then, the writer described an old man tying roses. The girl said he was Peter, the gardener. She also guessed the name of a girl with curly red hair and crutches. Her name was Anita.

Realisation by the Writer :While walking with the blindfolded girl, the writer became ten times more thoughtful than before. He also realised that when he described things, he himself found them more interesting.  

When it was time to leave, he told Miss Beam he was very sorry to go. Miss Beam smiled and said, “Then there is something in my system after all.”
